I've never owned a truck and I'm considering the purchase of a Tacoma however, it seems as though the bed is quite small. Do any of you owners feel that the bed on the Tacoma is extremely limiting. I anticipate using the truck for making runs to the dump a couple of times a year, camping and the occasional furniture move. I would appreciate any comments from short and long bed owners. Thanks in advance.

i have the short and thats because i wanted it. the 5' has been a hinder only a few times but with the tailgate down that adds a little bit of bottom surface and i've always managed to get done what i needed to. imo, i recommend the 6' if you have any hesitations about it. hope that helps.

I have a reg cab 6' bed with a bed extender. I have more than enough room for dump days, transporting my bike, loading up with wood for my stove and any other needs. Never needed a bed any larger. Don't need to drive a mammoth full size, my penis is perfect. :p

I have a 2013 double cab short bed (5' bed). My old 2004 was the same but I had a shell, so camping was not a big deal as I just piled everything in. With my new truck, I welded up some bed racks and welded up a cargo basket to go on top, so I will have two layers to hold gear for camping. Cheaper than a shell for now, and I learned how to weld.

As for making runs to the dump, I'm actually breaking up a concrete walkway this Spring to make it all flagstone. I do anticipate making two runs to the dump with the old concrete, if I can't borrow a friend's fullsize.

On another note, if you only plan on going to the dump a couple times a year, I don't think that would convince me to get a long bed, given the daily issues with parking a longer truck

I have and need a 6' bed. I use it close to capacity often, but have never needed anymore room. Not yet.

Issues with parking? That's funny. No issues at all parking a longer truck.

6ft bed works well, but I don't think I could make do with the 5ft bed. If you're using it as a truck, I would recommend going for the full length bed.

Most people on here will tell you that tacomas have a lot more to offer than just bed size. They are pretty fun and reliable vehicles if your looking for a truck as a daily driver. I've had both a double cab 5' and 6' foot bed tacoma and preferred the 6' for hauling stuff, but felt like it was less fun to drive with the longer wheelbase.

Also, I could camp comfortably in a 6' bed with a topper but not in a 5' bed, if actually sleeping in the truck is important to you then definitely go with the 6' bed.

If the bed turns out to be too small for hauling or dump runs, you could always pick up a small utility trailer.

I have a DCLB and have never regretted it. Just knowing the extra space is there is nice even if you don't use it all the time

I have a 6 foot bed and it is not a problem. I also have a small trailer which I use on rare occasions if I need extra length. I would suggest that if you use and need the 8 footers on a regular bases than the Tacoma might not be for you.

A little of this and a little of that.
I have a double cab short bed. I chose this length bed because I wanted the truck to fit in my garage and also because the six speed manual transmission isn't offered in the double cab long bed.

I also have a 6'x12' single axle utility trailer. I use it if I need to haul anything larger than what'll fit in the truck.

A full size truck may be the best option for you, or maybe a trailer for larger items.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the help, I won't be hauling stuff on a daily basis, and this truck would be my daily driver.

What parking issues? I hope you're referring to fitting lengthwise in a garage, not putting it in a parking spot.

I had the shorty bed on my 06. I was always wanting more room. Now I have the 6 1/2 foot in my Tundra but if I had a Tacoma 6 foot I would be ok too.

Kevine, just post that broken concrete up for free on Craigslist! Done that a few times, a couple guys came out once with a small Uhaul box van and took a huge pile of broken concrete all the way down to the 1/2 inch crumbs. It seems like there's always somebody out there looking for fill.

IMO... It's a truck it should have a long bed.
With a 6' bed, you can sleep in it when camping.
I've hauled 4x8 sheets of plywood and even a bunch of 12' 2xs. They stick out a bit but I wouldn't want to try that with a 5' bed.
One of the things I miss about my '84, it had a 7' bed.
