Been drinking beer and finishing up my rear bumper for the last while. Single big ass swing out or dual swingouts? That is the question. The hinge spindles are not cheap.

Or if you behave yourself, I may let you enter the manor, and persuade the sammichmaker to fabricate Irish car bomb cupcakes for us, upon which we may sup and become rather tipsy.

If you can make a strong enough one I don't see why you would need a dual

One would be nice. But I think two would promote longevity. I think a single would be heavy and weigh on the hinge. Maybe not though.

I agree, I know nothing about working with metal. If one can be strong enough that's what I'd do.

The hinge I plan to use can support 1500 lbs they claim. My concerns would be how much space a single swingout will need in a parking lot, the gravitational force it will have when opening on inclines (I'm not a bitch but I don't want it to go flying); dual swingouts would be more hassle every time I open the tailgate and cost more.

Couldn't you add some sort of limiting strap?

1500 lbs hanging out at what length? It's the moment torque you care about. That said, I'd go single assuming that hinge can do it.
