Utahn here... It's apparently a big deal legal wise in the mid west. I've been pulled over twice. First time, cop issued ticket. Second time, cop was a Tacoma owner and wanted to know how to do a satoshi and let me off  Moral of the story. Check your local laws, and keep modding your truck.

Is the tail light difficult to take apart? I was wondering if anyone had tried to plasti dip or paint the chrome ring around the brake light on the '12/'13 Tacomas? I am thinking of tinting my tail lights just a light smoke, but think the chrome ring will still stand out. Maybe this is a dumb idea and not all that noticeable.

I've seen someone black out the inside of the housing. But they didn't tint it afterwords... there's really no point. Blacking out the housing would allow the LEDs to be seen at their full potential rather than be slightly dimmed by night shade. Here's a picture from RedCBS' build.

That's kind of cool, I'll have to check into that more. Thanks!

How many people tried to do the buffing compound/wax with a applicator pad & elbow grease rather than a electric buffer?

I bought all the stuff but have no electric buffer, just applicator pads.

I did by hand. Only because I was too anxious and my drill died. :( It can be done. Mine look pretty shinetastic.

I recommend buying a cheap 30$ harbor freight buffer . I have one and it works great , just keep it in the minimum speed if you inexperienced like me . Just get some descents pads from Amazon or autotopia

Looks good as heck! I think I'm gonna do this rather than buying a whole new tail light

Just finished tinting my tails and third brake light! I actually tinted my IPCW aftermarket tails just to go with a different look! Followed the steps on this thread and they came out sick!!! Only thing I did different is apply the rubbing compound, plastic x and wax all by hand. Took a bit of sweat to do but they came out great!

Any reason this couldn't be done to the head lights?

I don't have a buffer either, but doing mine by hand wasn't getting the results I wanted.

After wet sanding up to 1200 grit, I used an electric drill with a Mothers Power Ball and Turtle Wax liquid polishing compound (non-abrasive) to get the mirror finish I was looking for. It worked like a charm.

To remove the vht paint from the tail light
    To redo them?
