Ignition cylinder is the same as door lock cylinder?

I read contradicting info. about lock cylinders. One person states that door lock cylinder is exactly same as ignition cylinder.

Other person says that ignition cylinder is longer. And because of that locksmith and dealer can make a key that will open doors but does not start a car.

So are they different or same?

 

Most newer vehicles have a chip in the key. They can open doors but without the chip being matched up with the computer, the vehicle most likely will not start.

 

thank you, i have basic model that does not have chip set.

 

It may still have the immobilizer in it, I'm not 100% sure. And as far as different depths from the door cylinder and the ignition, I don't know either but I don't see why they would be different really.

 

An ignition cylinder is completely different than a door lock cylinder. Door ones are designed to attach to rods, have holes in the bottom of the barrel to let moisture out, etc. Ignition ones are usually physically larger to accommodate the extra torque applied when the key is turned to "start"
