Key that open doors but doesn't start a truck.

Is it possible to shave off key to make it open doors only and not to start the truck?
Ignition lock is probably more complicated than door lock. The ignition probably longer, so maybe start by cutting off 1/8" from blade of the key and see what it will do. Thanks guys.

 

My roommate has had that done for his Nissan. I don't know how he did it but it opens his doors but won't start his truck. I think all he did was ask the key cutter person to make it not start the truck.

 

Go get a valet key cut that does not have a chip in it.

 

Does valet key is any different from regular key other then the chip?
I have basic truck, I do not have alarm or chip yet. I will do install myself, just waiting for summer.

 

Does your key have a d stamped on it? If you don't have a factory immobilizer I don't know any way to make a key that will open the door but not start the truck other than changing ignition cylinder.

 

I do not have a D. What is it for? Means key has immobilizer?

 

"D" or "G" means its a chip key with immobilizer

 

Just have a plain flat key without the chip in the top of it. that's what I did, works great.

 

If it doesn't fit the ignition it won't fit the door. They're the exact same.

 

I have that exact setup for my 2009 Tacoma . I simply had a Toyota blank key cut to match my existing transponder key. Since the blank doesn't have a chip , there is no way to start my truck. I had it cut at Home Depot. I'm pretty sure all V-6 Tacomas started using transponder keys in 2005. Should cost a few bucks, vs setting up transponder key which is a much more expensive venture ..

 

He has a regular cab. His factory key is not chipped.
A plain flat key will work in his truck just fine.

Most passenger cars come with a "valet" key that will open the doors and operate the ignition, but not open the trunk.
I've never seen one that will open the door but not operate the ignition... what would be the point?

Spare key that is hidden outside truck for lockout. It will give me piece of mind knowing if a key is found that it will only open door.

I made "wallet key" but if i lose my wallet, someone could take my truck.

 

That's what my cell phone and AAA card are for.

Seriously... driving since '79 and I've never once locked myself out.

 

That will do, but membership is around $140 or so a year. I have rode side assistance with auto insurance. But i think they charge a small fee. Like $35 to open door.

 

I did it with rental car once.

Other application I was thinking is try to prevent illegal search by LEO. When they ask you to step out, just lock the doors. After they let you go, get your spare key and unlock the door.

 

Just tell them that you so not consent to search.
If they want to search, they are going to search. If you don't let them in, they'll tow it to the station and search it there.
If they have PC/RS, they can search with or without consent.
If they don't have PC/RS, your refusal covers you legally.

 

After buying my truck the dealership sent me a plastic credit card key to keep in my wallet that only opens the door... had to take it in to the parts dept. to have them cut. All this at no charge.

 

Did not get anything... should call toyota? did all of you guys get that plastic key.
