Also looking at this one at about $50:

Like the comments indicate, scary because it secures like a regular camera strap, but the reviews are all rock-solid, and they are right that it does remove one of the two strap failure points (though it doubles the weight on one strap mount, so really it's a wash).

I didn't see the Joby plate before. That is a solution I can work with. I think I'll stick with the RS Sport and the Joby adapter plate.

Now if I could just find a monopod that uses the same QD as the Slik 700DX... but I guess I can buy a Pro800 ball head and mount it to any monopod.

I tried to cheap out... bought the 700DX head, thinking I could mount it to my Sunpak tripod to get rid of the pistol grip.
Nope. Tripod has a 1/4-20 stud, mount takes a 3/8-18.
I know I could use a reducer bushing, but I decided to just step it up and bought the 700DX legs.

    +1

75% of everything I've ever shot has been at a 35mm equivalent 50mm or wider.
25% has been in the 200-300 range (primarily air shows).

Very, very little in between, and it's only been recently (last couple of months) that I've touched anything wider or longer.

    24-105 isn't an L, 24-135 is. That's why.

The 24-105 4L is my primary studio lens. It's a great lens.

I like it. One thing that bugs me about mine (I should send it in) is that if it's tilted, it will push or pull the longer it sits in that position. No bueno.

The guys at Borrowlenses are awesome! Max and his pals are very knowledgeable and have a great attention to detail. If you know where you're going to be staying, they will ship to your location saving you a bit of rental too.

I was bummed to hear they got bought by Shutterfly tho.

Tremendous capital outlay to get the lenses. Then you have to figure shipping and maintenance costs-they check and clean the glass before it's ready to go out again-and if it's damaged, it goes back for repair. Add the asset taxes and all the business expense; I'm pretty sure they're not getting rich off this business. Doing well maybe, but not rich.

Is shipping time included in or count against the rental time?
Like, 3 day rental... do you actually have the item for 3 full days?

Yup... anyone who has ever owned rental property knows that it is far more costly than your own home.
If the rent payments only cover the mortgage, you're losing a lot of money.

And end it when you send them the tracking number?

That's not such a bad deal. I was thinking that a week long vacation would need a 2-week rental.

Regarding shipping and stuff. Check their website for their policies.

When I say "save you", I mean if you were going to head out someplace that would take three days to get to, if you ship the lens to the location, you don't need an extra week of rental to cover your travel.

I bet their super tele collection is way more than $75K. Maybe $750K
