Hey guys... I gotta pick up a friend from the Airport tonight, and in case I need to throw the chains on... should I put them on the front or rear, and should I throw 4WD on?

Thoughts? I'm confident enough driving in this stuff, but others opinions, at least on the chains, are always welcome

In my opinion chains come out when the roads are bad enough that you're going to be using them to get off of the road; not continuing to a destination and back..

You'll be limited to 30 Mph. as well..

4WD will help, but I find I prefer to do most of my highway speed snow travel in 2WD. I'll drop it in 4 to pass, though.

Drove almost all of the Alaska Highway in 2WD..

    YMMV

If you're a 2nd Gen. you'll rip your chains off on your UCAs if your chain up front..

I was running my truck and trailer overloaded recently in Spokane. I ran 2wd going across the state and most of the way. I didn't put it into 4hi until my back end slipped out twice on a slick road with more snow coming down, and I ended up going through deeper snow that I needed a little more traction for.

I have taken my truck out in snow and ice several times and I keep her in 2wd until I can't keep going in 2wd. I also don't put anything in the bed except a shovel (always be prepared). I have also been running the factory Dunlop tires, which are really not designed for snow.

My wife was driving to work one day with icy roads. She thought ahead and put the truck into 4x4. In doing so, she ended up losing control and almost took out a stop sign. Moral, don't put it into 4x4 until you can't move in 2wd.

These trucks are really quite amazing in their abilities, but you still can't be a complete idiot.

I got chains for my truck a couple years ago to make sure I would be able to get across Snoqualamie pass in winter (grandpa was about to die in Spokane). To this day, I still have never taken them out of the original bag they came in.

End story, you don't need chains to get somebody from the airport, and chances are that you won't even need 4wd. Remember that if the roads are wet, but not slushy, no snow, then don't be in 4wd. If you are in a low gear, and you gun it and get your back end to slip very quickly, then you may consider 4wd, but that doesn't mean to shift into it.

Only time I've needed 4wd is to pass through the roughs and that's more for safety.

I've got a 2 piece skid plate off my '07 TRD OR if anyone wants it. It's FREE! Just come and get it before I chuck it.

Anybody know if that second plate (the smaller one) comes factory on non TRD or offroad models? If it is only available for those packages, then I would be happy to take that piece but not interested in the other skid. I already have that piece of steel foil on my truck...

I let Jami (TruckGirl) know, since she's looking for skids and those are in much better shape than mine :p

Honestly it depends. I would watch TripCheck.org non stop. I heard on the radio earlier that the city of Portland was requiring chains on all vehicles on the Marquam and Fremont bridge.

For me, if there is snow on the ground (over 3") I put it in 4 hi. Drive slow and carefully. If the roads are slush I keep it in 2wd. But I have snow tires (Duratracs) so that might make a difference.

I would disagree. We got a fair amount of ice on the roads down here over the last couple of nights.

Just looked and saw he is Portlandian. My area, near Everett WA is just wet roads with snow on shoulder currently. We had about 2" total last night and it is already warming up and starting to melt.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
My neighbors looked at me weird for shoveling my drive way today. But I'm used to snow directly to ice from back in kansas.
