    depends on what info you want to access, from what I have been told by the engineers that come to the shop, its all in the ABS ecu, some freeze frame data you can pull with a scanner, some only they can upload.

    I believe that now they are built into the PCM. There is no way to disconnect, disable or modify them or your vehicle will not run. Don't worry about it. If I am correct if the laws keep changing no one will be able to use the information from them except law enforcement.

    If someone told me a year ago that NSA does what they done when snowden was working for them I would not have believed it. But it easy to call someone paranoid,,,,, You think it's not coming in name of safety and greater good?

    Ok guys, I have some solid info. Airbag module is a event data recorder. i found study done by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates for Toyota corp.

    It's in PDF file. I will try to attach it.
    I will buy airbag module from ebay and will mess with pins on memory chip.

    This is correct. I removed mine 8 years ago. There are only TWO computers in the continental US that can read the data, and they are closely guarded by TOYOTAUSA. Remember the stuck throttle shenanigans a few years ago? Even under court order Toyota didn't puke up that data. Interesting isn't it. Btw, I have a roll cage and five point harness so I deleted my airbags as well as ABS and Traction control, I'm not worried about the NSA knowing that I drive around with the throttle pinned 96% of the time lol.

    I read that too, but I think it's not true anymore. During crash info saved on microchip on airbag module. There plenty of mechanics who can connect directly to the chip and read, erase info. OR ADD info that was not there, like slower speed. There has been court cases using this crash info. already.
    When they say "ONLY TWO UNITS" i think they mean "official toyota readers" BTW info they did not release was for "accidental acceleration" cases. All other up for grabs with court order.

    After car is totaled, insurance does not need your permission to read it. I bet it will be in contract that you wave your right on crash info.

    But you can buy readers for $400 online. You can have someone do it for $40. Watch this:
