except that i only have pipe dies

never had an issue bending it either. 12 ton hydraulic with a proper die makes quick (kink-free) work out of it.

I've tried using that type of press and didn't have much success. I'm looking forward to seeing how you make it work.

I'll look for some steel and the fittings I need.

Kase, if you want to bring down your tubing bender we could make a party out of it. :)

I took our video camera and temporarily mounted it to the dash board of my Tacoma for a weekend just to see if it would be worth it. It taped at all times when I was away from the house, and in reviewing the tape, the need to have a dedicated dash camera because apparent to me. Aside from recording douchebag drivers on the road, it captured quite a bit of hilarity while I was parked. Watched a geezer load his groceries into the back of his SUV and then shove the cart across the road into another car.

As the camera itself would be mounted inside the vehicle, I'm not too worries about weatherproofing it or anything along those lines. Like I said, I'm more concerned about having a rugged and reliable recording unit. If I can piece together a set up much like yours, complete with 1080p footage quality and onboard screen, then I'd be much more incline to go that route.

    Cool, that sounds excellent.

I have only used one once, and I must have been using the wrong material, because I kinked every piece. That was a long time ago, so who knows.

We'll see what we can build.

why not just get a used go pro? the hero 2 records 1080, and gets a nice wide field of view, that most other cameras it's size won't. it's small, mounting is cake, and you could hard wire it for power, so that any time the truck is on, it's getting juice. only difference between it and another style setup, is that you have to hit on/off and record. nice big sd card, and you're set.

I was thinking that may be the solution, but having the nice thing about the DVR setups is the automatic over-wright and the power on with startup.

exactly. my trail cam setup turns on when i turn the key. no buttons to poress or anything. and the data override would be easy to have if you buy the right dvr. with my setup, it's just a question of clarity. you may not pull a license plate number from mine. but you'll certainly identify the vehicle. it may be just as simple as getting a nicer camera.

You have the orange bender with the hydraulic ram in the middle, right?

The material I was using was probably tubing.

    correct.

there are companies out there that sell you aftermarket dies and rollers so that the bender will do tube, but they are so expensive, you might as well just get a jd2 and that point.

So if we're using the 1-1/2" sch 40 that gives us an ID of 1.61", (1.9" OD - 2 x .145" wall). The couplers I've found are for tubing so we'll have to make one work. This is the one I'm leaning towards as it's made from a solid billet.

    http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com...uffstuff&Product_Code=TC-DUB15&Category_Code=

It's intended for 2.0 x 0.120 wall. That means the OD of the shank should be 1.76". The OD's will be similar, but we'll have to grind down the shank to make it fit in the pipe. We'll have to take away 0.075" all around to make it fit.

    I think that'll work.

The GoPro won't overwrite old data. Once it hits the capacity of the memory card, the camera ceases to record. The DVRs will overwrite the data in a continual loop. Also, in case of an accident, some dash cams will auto lock video a few seconds before impact. Also, like Nathan said, the ability to power the DVR in a variety of ways as opposed to running off battery alone is also very attractive.

Id want something that's on 24/7. It's a nice piece of insurance in case you're parked somewhere and your vehicle is hit and the other driver flees. I've been thinking too, it would be nice to have a rear-facing camera so you can have 180* of video coverage. Just hook the feed into the same monitor as the front cam as long as there is an option to choose from different inputs.

Is it a 100% protection guarantee? No, but having a DVR far outweighs not having one.

Just get a 360 bubble camera, cut a hole in the center of your roof and mount it upside down on the roof.
