We live pretty close to our neighbors, and I park my truck about eight feet from their bedroom window. The lock/unlock beep is a pretty loud, piercing sound, and I was concerned that it might annoy people at night.

I popped the hood to identify where the sound comes from, and it is made by a little piezo beeper mounted to the back of the radiator closure panel, near the top. It is a typical piezo beeper, and has a small hole about 1/8" in diameter where the sound is emitted. Covering the hole with my finger dampened the sound a lot.

I had an old pair of foam ear plugs from shooting, and I rolled one of them up and stuck it in the beeper hole. Perfect.

I can still hear the beep from as far away as I can lock/unlock the truck, but it is maybe 1/10 as loud as it once was. Certainly less likely to annoy the neighbors.

It's not quite a free mod, but I think the cost would be about a quarter if you have to buy the earplugs new.

If anyone wants, I'll grab a picture or two.

Isn't there a trick with the little red button to turn off the beep? I'm not sure on 09's but on my 05 in the owners manual there is a trick to turn off the 1 and two honks when I lock/unlock. It does get annoying. I think you have to have the key in the on position and puch it like 6 times. I can't remember, but I have been wrong before

The VIP alarm that is an option on most Toyota's beeps. The factory remote door locks that come with almost all the tacomas doesn't beep.

I suspect any 09 truck with the "engine immobilizer" is likely to have the beep.

This is what I used :D I'm the same way I live in an apartment and felt guilty leaving every morning because my truck is like 5 ft from a families window. Completely disables the horn - leaves the lights that flash so you still know when it's locking/unlocking.

*edit* and just a hint - when you do this correctly you'll hear a small beep ( the last beep you'll ever hear ) ^^

I just said "and mine beeps".

I have the immobilizer thing. I doubt it's an alarm, no VIP alarm noted on sticker.

    Pretty much stock
09's with keyless beep from the factory, no alarm needed.

Meh I never use my key to unlock anymore - and there was no point to me having the beep on the lock/unlock past locking it from a long distance where I can't see the lights but that' rarely happens if at all.

I want mine to do the default double-beep when locking but no beeps when unlocking.

Haven't seen a code sequence for that yet.

Hey Thanks for your opening post. I'm going to try this soon. This sounds like a great cheep/free mod.

I have a 2009 with the factory key-less entry system with engine immobilizer too and it beeps once when I lock and beeps twice when I unlock and I agree it's a bit too loud for my taste.

I have an 09 , it goes beep when I lock it and beep beep when I unlock it , and when I left my keys in the truck and tried to unlock the back door with driver's door button , but accidentally hit lock instead of unlock , I locked myself out of my truck with the keys in it ,

OZ then went " What the BLEEP BLEEP BLEEPEDY BLEEP !!!!"
