LOL aww man, what a great story! It really reminds me of how I got started into wheelin as well. Although I never took in water in my cab like you, i had pretty much the same expression as you did the first obstacle i came across. "Holy Shit!"

This section was my very first taste of what offroading was going to be about...

But only got this deep in the water...

I really liked the videos and pics you shared! Listening (or rather reading) about your experience closely mimics mine so i can see why you are obsessed. ;) I think we all get like that after our first time wheelin for real. My life changed drastically after that. :D

A small handful of select mods.

I would never go that deep on an auto tranny. Auto's are a lot more forgiving off road and helpful. I am going 4.56's a month. My personal philosophy is that I could see having 35's for a while but eventually going back to 33's in far future. With 4.88's and 33's it will be way over-geared.

I was very happy with 4.56's on 33's and am still pleased on 35's. Seems like a good ratio all around, not screamin on the highway and has good 4lo grunt.

If I was manual I dont know if I would do it any different but a crawl box would be more important, manuals are a pain in the rocks

Im 4.88 on my auto with 35's I find it a little to high, but im planning on going to a 36 after these wear out. If I was going to stay on 35's I would have gone 4.56.

I've found 4.56 with 35x12.5x17 on a manual trans to be pretty near the perfect setup.
It drives and accelerates like stock.

I plan on 35's, but it'll be a while. 35's, gears, +2" LT, and new rear suspension won't be cheap.

Are Trail Grappler's directional tires or whatever the term is? It just looks like your tires are "backwards" to me.

    Looks great otherwise.

Cool thanks for sharing your story! Haha we might be crazy, but we're not the only ones. It's amazing that something so stressful can get me so pumped and excited.

Yeah if you can, avoid water in the cab. I got super lucky that my truck was angled the way it was. Didn't damage anything. Just had 2 days worth of cleaning to do. Which is nothing considering how bad it could have been.

Thanks guys I'm sticking with 4.56s then. I am so dreading regearing.

    My options:
    1) Go to Local shop parts and labor
    2) Buy gears, front locker & have shop install them.
    3) Buy complete thirds have shop install them.
    4) Buy complete thirds do it myself.

I am pricing it out all ways and it's not cheap anyway you look at it. I want to do #4, but I'm a little apprehensive. I'm not an idiot, but I am no mechanic.

Doing thirds is easy. I would go with #4. I spread my front and rear install over the weekend. Did the rear on a saturday along with my rear disc brake kit took about 5 hours. Drove it home, then sunday back to the shop, up on jack stands and did the front in about 3 hours. The weekend after I installed my arb twin pump compressor and plumbed the air lines and ran the wiring. Which took about 3 hours, most of that was mounting the pump.

4:88 & 35s are puuuuurfect with the auto trans. Coming from a guy who crawls, bajad snow, and does a lot of highway driving. It's great everywhere.

I am going to do #4 it just saves so much money. I am cautious when I work on stuff so everything takes me longer than most but I am confident I can do this. I will simply make sure I have everything I need and plenty of time before I dive in.

What did you use to seal everything up? FIPG, "the right stuff," Permatex(which one)?

Really? Would there be any HWY advantage to going with 4.56s instead? For example can I carry a little more speed? I do most of my driving around town & hwy.

What Mileage are you getting spoonman? Socalduckslayer what mileage are you getting? Obviously different trucks, but curious regardless.

2 MPG matters when I take trips from Chicago to Moab.

If any other autos could chime in that would be much appreciated.

I get around 13mg average, very little highway driving. Probably about 15 on the highway on a trip. I believe that 4.88 in the front requires a different carrier as well unless you are putting in an ARB at the same time.
