Mastercraft, Hankooks, or 4x4???

Here's my situation, I drive an '03 Prerunner and I'm sick of getting stuck. I bought Falken Wildpeak AT's last year and regret it big time (no traction on anything). I'm trying to make winter more bearable and offroading more fun with the truck and have been looking into mastercraft courser mxt and hankook dynapro mt tires.

Which would you buy or should I start crying in the corner for not getting 4x4?

Any advice for driving offroad with a prerunner is greatly appreciated too!

Have heard lots of good things about Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs... They will be my next tire.

 

Nothing replaces 4wd..period.

Hard to replace 4x4 but I just got BFG AT KO's (replaced Firestone Destination AT's) and when I got home here in WV I was able to get in and out of my drive in 2WD with a little spinning but I couldn't even get out with the worn Destinations in 4WD. Good luck, but you can't go wrong with BFG.

 

Could always start saving money to convert to 4x4

 

I have a prerunner with duratracs. Couple sandbags in the bed and it has done well in snow. I have done little offroading with them, but what I have done has been ok. Couple spins here and there but that's it. Good tire that can do quite a bit on a 2wd.

 

Probably money better spent selling the 2 and buying a 4. The best 2wd out there is pretty poor when you need 4wd. But if the worst you see is a little snow on the pavement $20 in sandbags will probably do the job.

 

Get rid of the 2x4 and buy a 4x4. Yes diff tires will help but the amount and type of snow that you get in NY, vs NC or anywhere else, deff warrants 4x4. I lived in upstate NY (watertown) for 7 yrs without 4x4 (except last 1.5 yrs) and hated every winter because of it.

 

I have the dynapro mt and they are not great in snow and ice. I even siped mine. They are good, but not great. They like to pull the front end into the deeper snow on the edges of the road and handle a little sloppy in slush. They brake better than the all terrains I've always ran previously. Aired down they have good traction but I don't run them aired down on the road. If you put studs in them I bet they would be amazing in winter.

Don't be fooled though, a mud terrain is not a great snow tire. The duratrac is rated for snow though.

How sentimental are you with your truck? if alot, like me, ever think about getting a locker? if not, sell it for 4x4

 

He probably has an elocker if its not a 4banger. Can't see his specs from my phone.
I installed a powertracs no slip locker in mine because it didn't come with an elocker.
It's definatley not as good as having a 4x4 but its a shit ton better than an open diff.

 

There snow and there's ice. Tires behave completely different in each of those .. In snow, MT's will be your best choice. For ice, AT's will have far better traction than MT's especially something with the snowflake symbol and lots of factory sipes. For AT's any of the newer generation ones would be fine. (Hankook, Toyo, Yokohoma, Firestone etc.)

 

locker won't help that much.

4wd is better then a rear locker with 2wd.

 

I have a set of hankooks, and will NEVER buy them again. there is so much sidewall and soft rubber flex that they squirm all over, you can't tell the difference between the start of a slide or the shift of the rim on these flimsy tires. studded snow tires and 4 or 6 bags of gravel in the back are the answer if you can't upgrade to a 4X4 just don't waste your money on a set of hankooks.

If you're location is correct and you're in Rochester, NY, you should grab a box of tissues and run to the corner for not getting 4wd. That region gets dumped on with snow, 4wd is almost a must unless you just plan to keep the truck parked until the roads are cleared. Tires can help, tall, skinny with a tread pattern made for snow would be best. End of the day though, 2wd will only take you so far in deep snow.
