Help with tire sizing!

I have a 2012 reg cab tacoma. 100% stock. I have searched on here for the last few hours and cannot seem to find a definite answer to my question. I understand that 265/75/16 is the "biggest" tire I can run without lift and mods. My question then is; can I run a taller more narrow tire without any lift or trimming?

I would say no...

 

Even a 265/75-16 can have some rubbing. Mine rubbed the mud flaps before I lifted it.

 

So what about 235/85/16?

 

Research the 255/85/16 size. I think I've seen a couple trucks with this size on stock wheels without any lift. I ran this size on stock wheels and didn't have any rubbing but I have a 3" lift. The tall and skinny tire on the proper spec. Wheels could fit but possibly a little trimming.

 

Or 245/85/16?

 

I have been told 265/75/16 is the tallest tire that will fit stock. Otherwise it will rub the fenderwells.

 

If you like the 235/85/16 then you'll be fine. It's basically the skinnier brother of the 265/75. If you want a 32 and don't mind the tall/ skinny tire then go 235/85 over 265/75.

 

I actually like the look of tall and skinny and I am looking to shoe horn in the biggest tires possible with the least amount of modding. The taller the better

 

Also let's say I get a 2" lift. Then what would be to maximum size I could run with emphasis on the tallness? This is again without trimming.

 

32.5" . After that you get into removing mudflaps.

 

If you get a 2" lift then you'll be good with 255/85's on stock wheels.

The stock wheel specs are perfect for a tall n skinny tire. You'll have rubbing if the tire gets stuffed in the wheel well but for daily driving you'll be good to go.

The issue most people have is that when they go with a bigger tire it's usually also wider. Taller and wider on stock or after market wheels is when you get the rubbing issues even just daily driving. The tall and skinny tire has less rubbing because of the width, it's slightly skinnier than the stock 265/70 tires.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just trying to work through this but I'm new to it. I won't be doing any hardcore off-roading but I do go off road some. I drive about 400 miles a week almost exclusively interstate. What I'm trying to do is put the minimum into mods on the truck and stuff the biggest tires possible. I will be trading this truck in for a 4dr at some point so I don't want to deck it out too much.

So now I wonder, do the clearance issues have to do with the front more? If so could I put a 1.4-2" spacer up front and leave the rear and run a larger tire?

 

Well with the high mileage weekly driving I wouldn't recommend going big/ heavy tires because it's will bring your mpg's down. If your ok with that then instead of spacers get the 5100 bilstein shocks and set them at the 3rd setting to gain 1.75" of lift. This height in the front will get you close to sitting level, maybe a little nose high. And yes most rubbing issues come from the front. You could leave the rear suspension alone and just lift the front, which is referred to as "leveling the truck".

 

Well he does say it's mostly interstate driving which bigger tires would actually help a little because more weight=more momentum, and there's a slightly lower gear ratio which in turn brings rpm down, and fuel economy up. I went to 31x10.5x15 from 235/75/15(basically a 28.5"), and my economy is about the same city, if not a little better. And that's from street tires to aggressive tread all terrains

 

I think I am leaning towards a leveling kit to keep it simple. Now I just need to figure out which kit and how big of tires I can go if I just lift front to level it.

 

The best level your gonna find would be some bilstein 5100s with some OME or another reputable brand coils. It's apparently a great off road shock with great on road characteristics, and the height is ajustable. I wish I could get them but They are just a little pricey. I will probably be going with some rough country shocks with extended coil springs, and a very small spacer. 80 bucks for shocks vs $150ish
