Weird thump after accelerating or braking diagnosed.

I've been wondering where this noise was coming from for a long time, sometimes hard enough to feel it, and finally figured out it's the gas sloshing and 'banging' the ends of the tank. It seems most pronounced around 3/4 tank which is why it came and went with a strange frequency. The other weird thing to me was that it thumps immediately after hitting the gas or brakes, not at the instant, and sometimes thumps more softly a second time.

Just thought I'd post it in case someone else is scratching their head over it.

 

And here was me thinking it was the bodies in the truck bed rolling back and forth....

 

I did too at first, but it continued to thump when the bed filled up.

 

See, I figured that once the bed filled up it was coming from the bumpstops that the springs were resting on...

 

Nah, with my little base cheapo it's solidly on the stops and not budging.

 

Keep it going. Wanna see who wins this one!! Good stuff so far. Oh, and interesting point in first post.

 

See I sprung (haha, spring pun!) for the SR5 package, so I had quite a few bodies in there before the springs had settled completely onto the bumpstops. And with the condition roads around here are in, there's a lot of bouncing around back there. At one point there were a couple arms hanging over the side of the bed, and when I hit a bump it sounded like a the opening to "Slow Ride"
Now they're all frozen in, though, and I was still hearing the thumping.

 

So how do you actually know it's the gas sloshing or are you assuming this ?

After running the pile of dead bodies through a chipper shredder to eliminate the possibility (the outlet chute is conveniently Taco height), I laid under the truck with it in park and rocked it and could hear and feel the gas slosh & thump.

 

The arms hanging off is a dead giveaway (dead pun, I'm ahead), hate when that happens. The other day I got pulled over for a brake light bulb out. When the cop asked if there was anything in the vehicle he should know about I Jedi mind tricked him into forgetting about the bed. I only take half credit, I'm sure he was just taken by the awe of my bitchen truck. He apologized for inconveniencing me and replaced the bulb himself.

 

Wait, if you ran them through the chipper first how do you know that it wasn't the detritus from the bodies that you heard sloshing and thumping?

He was probably so busy trying to reconcile with the fact that Tacomas come in 2WD that he didn't even notice the body slurry that you had sloshing around in the back. Me personally, I propped all of mine up in sitting positions, so that once they froze solid it just looks like I'm giving some friends a lift. With as cold as it's been lately none of the local cops care enough to pull me over and ticket me for something so minor as unsecured passengers. Besides, since I closed all their eyes they just look like they're dead asleep, and waking them up with the blue lights would be rude.

 

It was in the 80's and sunny here so I can't pull off the easy 'passenger' story. Strangely, it only stinks when I'm backing out of my driveway. Maybe I got some spray on the reverse lights or something.

 

You could put some sunglasses on them, a la "Weekend at Bernie's"
Of course, it's too late for that now that you've converted them to a semi-liquid.

 

Damn, and I have a bunch of cheapo sunglasses too; you know you can't loose them, only the good ones. I'll pull the drain plug and start over, I had extras from my boats so I installed one in the bed.

 

Your woodchipper must make really fine chips, then. If I ran them through my chipper the chunks would be too big and they'd plug the drain. And then I'd have to fishing around in there to unblock it, and that'd just be unpleasant.

 

It does pretty well, combined with the lye I toss into the mix, not a prob. I'm heading out to the desert this weekend so I'll come back empty. It's a good time, pull the plug and wait for the ravens and buzzards and do some hunting. Then wait for the coyotes to come for them and do more hunting.


Truth is I'm too much a softie to shoot animals just for fun, but some find it fun.

 

Man, that's ballsy. With the reputation Toyotas have for rust, I'd be awfully hesitant to dump a bunch of lye in there...
On the other hand, where you're at rust is probably less of an extreme concern than it is here in the Northeast

 

The bed's all plastic so no issue.



This truck used to be in Miami Beach, Florida and it did get quite rusty.
