President Obama signed into law a program the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). This is a federal program that helps you purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle.

Another way the Gov't is just spending on the flavor of the day. This doesn't help anyone.

Nope....you don't get to "trade in" you vehicle. It's crushed and taken off the road. You get the amount from the government and NO trade in value.
    TRUTH!

It helped me. Needed to replace my POS 96 Dodge Ram 1500 that I bought a couple years ago as a beater truck (for $800!.) Needed a new trans this year, was going to just donate it and buy another junker. However, with this program, I decided it was a good time to buy a new truck instead. Getting $4500 for a truck I paid $800 for made me pretty happy. Plus, they got a truck off the road that hemorrhaged trans fluid.

I'm thinking people with POS cars are going to take advantage of this. Credit companies will loan them the money for a new car. They get their $4500 off, whatever.

Two months later they wont make payments. Another crisis.

Socialism at it's finest. But, I do understand why people would take advantage of the program. $4,500 for a piece of crap is a good deal. I just don't like my tax payer dollars funding other people's car purchases.JMO.

Yep, let the car companies cover the bill, not the US taxpayer. When and where is my stimulus package??

What I am also upset about is how they are rewarding the people who have these clunkers and giving them money to get a nicer car, when the people who have been proactive and already gotten a fuel efficient car don't get anything. People get rewarded for being reactive, and not for being proactive.
