It was a sinkhole that developed there. I remember driving by that place a lot when I lived in Houston. I am not exactly a FAN of Corvettes, but it is sad to see ANY classic car be destroyed like that. Some of those I heard were one-of-a-kind originals.

Only one that was eaten was really nice. The other 7 are 30 years or younger.

Yeah, one of them was the only 1983 model left in existence. Sad news for automotive history, whether you're a Corvette guy or not (my 2nd favorite sports car behind Mustangs).

EDIT: Emergency personnel allowed them to get in and save the '83 before the sinkhole got it, so that car was not lost. My mistake. Here's what was lost:

"The museum issued a statement that said six of the damaged cars were owned by the museum and two — a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil — were on loan from General Motors.
The other cars damaged were a 1962 black Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette, the museum said." - from the courier-journal.com

 good thing this wasn't during visiting hours. Does insurance cover sink holes?

Right, but they made some for R&D and the museum has the only one left. But yes, it was not lost in this.

I believe there were 2. And the museum has one.

When the C4 came out it was an awesome leap forward for the Vette...and I wanted one real bad. Couldn't afford one until 1996, the last year of the C4's ironically.
