C'mon now, you know bees, wolves and grizzlies are a lot different. I've been in two bee swarms in my life, both times the bees were moving their colony somewhere else. I enjoyed it, they swarmed all around me I heard them coming for about 15 seconds before they got to me, had a Black Lab with me both times, they didn't bother me nor the dog. Had several land on me no problem.

Now, a wolf pack surrounding you, that's a whole different matter, right? A grizzly bear? I heard one guy tell me "The only thing a grizzly is scared of is another grizzly." I remember reading about the Lewis & Clark expedition when they first ran into grizzlies on the west bank of the Missouri River. They had to change their landing spots until they found one that DIDN'T have a grizzly challenging them. I'm sorry, but I really don't want to run into wolf packs or grizzlies, I can deal with them if everybody else wants them, but that's not an ideal kind of thing for a weekend outing . . . .

Well sure, the wolves and the grizzlies have been wiped out. There used to be this thing called a Timber Wolf that roamed the Eastern US. Extinct. There used to be these things called panthers that roamed the Eastern US. Pretty much extinct. Wolves and grizzlies used to roam the Great Plains along with bison from Texas into Canada, all over the southwest US, into the northwest. Hell, I remember reading an account of the last grizzly killed in Southern California was in Trabuco Canyon (Traveler's home country) in 1903. The bear was raiding a beekeepers traps.

I lean toward let Mother Nature take her course, don't extinct predatory species. However, boy oh boy, camping would not be easy if that were the case. You'd need a guard up and you wouldn't be sleeping easy.

Well of course not, Ding. They've been wiped out for the most part. Jebus, I was talking about reintroduction, didn't I make that clear? I guess I didn't. There's some people that want to reintroduce wolves and grizzlies into Colorado. I'm OK with it if the majority wants it, I can deal with it. It's a challenge, yeah a big challenge. Those are the top two predators in North America.

Google incidence of death due to wolves and bears in Canada where we still have them , divide that into 30 million

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but lets say you're back country camping, do you worry about bears coming into your camp, wreaking a little havoc? I've seen it before. Happens all the time. Mostly black bears, a determined grizzly is a whole different matter. 350 lbs vs 1200 lbs.

Is there still a bounty on wolf pelts in Canada? I think there still is one on the books in Colorado.

    You gotta be bear aware

No bounty on wolves , I think they are protected as are grizzly , at least in BC .

There is a strictly regulated hunt for grizzly in BC , I would have to look up the wolf's status

I'm wondering how current that site is , it shows our GST rate at 6% but it was dropped to 5% in 2008

I agree. i plan and participate in providing folks with disabilities on multi-day wilderness adventures. Hearing the howl of wolves is a memorable high light, and we have nothing to fear of them.

Grizzlies command large areas, and are fairly predictable. Black bears can react defensively or be predatory, and are more un-predictable. We also have cougars, and wolverines.

Practicing good camping practice - not eating, preparing or storing any food or toiletries (ie spitting out toothpaste) where you sleep is essential to keeping yourself safe in backcountry camping. Situational awareness - recognizing signs and tracks of animal activity, and recognizing where you or the animals are vulnerable are good habits to reduce the chance of any encounter to very near zero.

It is part of the wilderness experience, where we share the environment and may not be top dog. It can be a liberating and even spiritual experience.

I got pissed when Yogi stole my pic-uh-nick basket, good thing I bottled up some antifreeze in used Gatorade jugs, looks like melon flavored. OP approved method.
