I tried to search, but couldn't find a straight answer - does adding sliders (weld-on or bolt-on) have any effect on your insurance policy? If I drill holes or weld something to my frame, and then somebody rear-ends me and bends my frame, is the insurance company going to say "well, you modified your frame and weakened it, so we're not paying."

Does anyone have any experience with insurance adjusters and modified trucks? I'm not talking about off-road damage - that definitely isn't covered, but I don't want to be out of $20,000 because I "voided" my policy. I don't want to call my insurance company and ask because then I'm sure I'll get flagged or something for being an off road driver and having modified my frame. I don't trust any insurance company at all.

Welding them on could give you problems down the road if your frame rusts out... Toyota would consider it unauthorized modifications to the frame... Bolting them on in existing holes shouldn't be an issue with toyota or any insurance company.

It's going to depend on your insurance company. Some companies are going to be fine with aftermarket parts on the vehicle. Some companies will up your rates because of that. Some of them may not insure you because of aftermarket parts. You'd be better off if you inquired with your insurance company that you're with or that you're going to be with. Since we don't know what is on your policy or you're dealing with we aren't really going to be able to give you a straight answer. You can phone and don't give them any information. Just "inquire." There is too many variables for us to say. This why you haven't been able to get a straight answer when you searched.

Who needs insurance if you have sliders? :)

Most insurance companies won't care. If you have some cheap insurance company, they might. Really small or cheap insurance companies will try to find anything to void your policy. In the end, it all depends on the claims specialist/adjuster.

I have had numerous modified vehicles go through insurance (not my fault, I swear). All didn't even ask. These companies were AAA, Mercury and Esurance.

I got nearly T-Boned and the insurance company gave me the cash to replace them because my driver side slider that got smoked. No comments about welding or bolt or any extra parts.
Some do have rules about specific coverages for aftermarket parts and it make change your rates, but look at your complete policy before you start asking them. My company covers 3K worth of parts without a question,,,,After that - gotta declare it.

Most insurance adjusters wouldn't know a slider from a step/nerf bar

Thanks for the input. My insurance is through USAA and they're generally pretty good. I think I need to take a closer look at my policy to be certain.

I'm probably going to be switching to USAA soon. Let me know if you find anything weird!

Last time I checked with my insurance agent (Allstate) they told me that aftermarket parts are fine and covered unless they are for "racing purposes"
