I haven't really had the chance to research this yet, but I heard there were some places down by Corpus Christi that I could drive on the beach. Would any of you happen to be familiar with a good place?

Ideally I'd like to drive right up and start fishing.

You would probably have a harder time finding a part of the beach you can't drive on. From what I've seen most states don't allow vehicle access to beaches, however Texas allows it on most every beach. There are some exclusions, but over all, most anywhere, and it will be obvious which parts are driven on a which are not. Mustang Island, between Port Aransas and fish pass, or between fish pass and packer channel & the causeway bridge are great options. There is a small section that doesn't require a parking permit (I'm thinking around marker 74ish.. but don't recall). PP's can be bought most anywhere .. gas stations etc. If you're seeking a bit more adventure and off road challenge, you can enter South Padre Island state park, and drive the entire length of it (around 65 miles or so) down to the land cut. I wouldn't advice going it alone for a first timer, as the beach is always changing and has it's challenging sections here and there. You'll have less people most likely and fewer to none the further you go.

x2....When I was in school I would do this trip every few weeks or so and its definitely not a smart idea to try it alone. I have hit it a few times with good conditions and never had a problem, but I do remember once or twice when the tide was super high and things kinda got hairy.

Awesome man, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I'm a desert rat from NM, water isn't exactly something I'm used to. I'll take your advice and wait to go with some other people to the harder areas.

If you're just wanting to get on the beach in your truck and do some surf fishing, then I would suggest the stretch of beach between Port A and SPI drive (where the causeway bride is). It's a long stretch and you can usually find a spot to yourself if you want. Each end of the beach, down at Port A and at fish pass have jetties that you can get out on (walking) if you want to do that. You can also park and fish off the piers but that costs a small fee. The jetties are a free way to get out a little deeper and stay dry. They're made up of huge square cut boulders, so if someone with you, or yourself, has any physical limits it could be a challenge. You would have to be able to step over various sized gaps etc on uneven surfaces that are wet and dry etc. Nothing major, but just thought it's better to be informed. I don't recall what the cost to get into Padre Island national park is, but it's often less crowded, and you of course don't have to run way down the beach to enjoy it. The parking passes for Mustang Island etc are pretty cheap, I usually just get the year pass so I don't have to mess with it again. Lunch/gas/shopping and the usual can be found at either end of mustang island, either in Port A or at SPI drive. If you're going overnight, there are plenty of places all along mustang to stay, but they are pricier since they are on the beach. But depending on the time of year, they adjust prices. Better rates in Port A at places that are not on the beach as well as SPI drive and in Corpus etc.
