Exhaust tip/tips painted black

I have purchased a borla cat back, single exit, exhaust system and it is being shipped currently. I was considering painting the tip flat/matte black to make it not stand out as much because I'm not a huge fan of chrome. Has anyone tried to paint a borla exhaust or similar exhaust? Pictures would be great also.

When it comes to paint, I am considering grill paint (heat resistant) or bed liner paint (rhino liner or similar company). I'm not sure if the rhino liner would hold up to the heat so any suggestions are great. My other concern is the paint chipping away with a few months after a few rocks bounce off of it and I don't want to have to repaint it every few months so if anyone has tried this and had/not had luck with it then please let me know.

 

A while back I decided to plastidip my back bumper black. While I was at it, since I had some extra left over, I also did the tailpipe. I wasn't fully expecting it to last but it has for several months. It has faded a little bit but is still on there and not peeled off. If this is holding up, I am sure rattle can bedliner will also. If not, you can always get it powder coated for pretty cheap. Even if it does come off, it only takes a few minutes to do it again, not like it is a difficult task.

 

Yea I hadn't even considered plasti-dip. I will probably do that so if it starts coming off, I can completely peel it off and re-do it instead of having to get some sort of paint remover to remove other paints. Thanks for the picture

 

No problem, I am happy with it. Like you said, if it starts coming off I will remove it and redo it. I am not sure how easy it will be to remove though after being baked on but nothing a little sand paper wont take care of or a wire wheel on a grinder maybe.

 

Rust-Oleum makes a high-temp barbecue paint that works well and can be easily touched up with repeated applications. I've used it for years on non-stainless exhaust systems including tube headers and it has an advantage of being somewhat rust inhibiting and doesn't require elaborate preparation. I'm sure there are other similar products, but with a little care Rust-Oleum paints do very well.

 

I painted a friends 335i tips black using Dupli-color Shadow. It says on the box that it can be used on the exhaust. It comes with two paints one to black it out and then one to protect it. It turned out really well.

Does it come out to be a glossy or flat/matte finish?

 

It's pretty glossy

 

For what it's worth, my only preparation was wiping it off with a wet rag and then a dry one. Basically got the dirt off and called it good.

 

Good to know. I'll probably go with some rubbing alcohol, seems to do the trick with my past experience.

 

Gotcha, I like the idea though and its a great price. I bet there is a similar product with a matte/flat protectant/sealer layer.

Right now I'm kind of in between rust-oleum flexi-dip and plasti-dip.

 

I did mine with PlastiKote Hi-Temp paint. From the label; "Highly durable silicone resin, ideal for headers and exhaust manifolds, withstands intermittent heat up to 1300F." Followed the directions, cleaned it up with MEK and cured it in the oven. So far, so good. Good luck.

 

Yea I bought a similar product to this and that is what I'm going to go with. I'm pretty sure the tip is welded on so I don't know how I will cure it yet. My thought now is to use the truck to heat it up but I was planning on painting it before I install it. Any suggestions?

 

I just used plain ole flat black spray paint, worked fine. Pretty much anything you use is going to fade and look like poop after a while anyway.

went with plasti-dip. Put about 4 or 5 coats on there and it turned out great. I have the mudflaps on now to kinda protect it but I'll take those off once I get some new tires and lift.

 

Nice job. Looks awesome. Good idea putting the mud flaps on to protect against getting blasted by the rear tires

 

How long did this last on the tailpipe? I've got some plastidip left over and I'm thinking about doing the same thing...
