So I am starting to save me money for an SC and would like to put a CAI with it, but after talking to the dealer they told me that the TRD CAI is not compatible with the TRD S/C. Does anyone have a CAI that they recommend with the TRD S/C? I want the S/C to help bring back some power when I put on 35's, and I tend to do some off roading (rock crawling and dirt trails). Anyone have anything that they recommend?

    Thanks

    Justin

One of my friends has the AFE. Not sure of any others though.

The TRD CIA will work with the SC.

But you should really re-gear to gain the power back. CIA alone wont do it. SC helps.

    Yeah I will regear too.

Do you know why they say that then? Because I know others have run it as well, but I'm not sure why the some claim it won't work.

I'm not sure but the instructions say for off road use only also. I have already passed emissions with mine on and my A/F mixture is OK too. I do have the older version TRD CIA that is almost identical to the AFE. I did hear a while back that the newer TRD CIA was running lean on the A/F mix for some people but I can't confirm that. I have been running the SC, CIA and snorkel for well over 100k miles so far with no problems.

AFE stage 2 or the original TRD CAI are good options. The newest TRD CAI had some issues, but there is a quick fix for it. Requires just a little bit of trimming of one of the couplers.

S/C, CAI, and snorkel? Man I am jealous! That sounds like the best of every world possible lol.
Yeah as Memario1214 was saying, I think the original TRD CAI is different than the one that they make today, thus leading to the issue with the new one and the S/C.
Okay sweet. That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks man. So AFE Stage 2 you shouldn't have to do anything to make it compatible with the S/C?
EDIT: And which Stage 2? I see there are these two options:

That's correct. If you go that route, please get the closed box style. The open filter type might look cool, but there is absolutely no performance benefit to it, and in some cases (K&N on the Tacoma for example) it has been shown to actually decrease power.

Gotcha. It all makes sense. Thanks man. Yeah I would imagine that the closed one would be just a little bit better of keeping the dust and dirt out too. Now does it matter regarding the Pro 5 R and the Pro Dry S? I would imagine that the Pro Dry S would be better because it is an Oil-Free Synthetic whereas the Pro 5 R is a Oiled Cotton. Am I correct?

I prefer the oiled filter in dusty conditions. I have used both and the oiled filter will keep all the dust out. The dry filter will not in certain circumstances.

Depends on what you plan to use the truck for. If you plan on running through the desert in dusty conditions and are okay with the maintenance of the oiled style, go with that. I personally have an oiled filter, but that is just what came with mine. The Pro Dry S is going to be more than suitable 99% of the time if you live in town and spend most of your time on the pavement. Only time I see the necessity is heavy dust conditions.

I do mainly highway but then some off road trails and a lot of winter driving. So it sounds like the Pro Dry S is not the one I want. How often do you have to oil it?

You might be overestimating your use of the vehicle... Are you doing this?
    DSCF2064_bc68d3bfa9bb1ff44d34e70bfb5cdd4103828dd7.jpg

If not you probably don't need an oiled filter. I personally don't need one, but it came with so I have one. Regardless I'm not here to tell you exactly what to buy, but rather give you conditions where the R type is warranted. Winter driving won't matter. I just check mine periodically and recharge it whenever it starts to lose its red color. Usually happens somewhere in the 6-8 month range.

No I totally understand. Sorry not I think I've gotten confused between the two lol. So for typical off roading and daily driving which one would be better?

I do like the picture tho lol

Well I want with the AFE Stage 2 SI Pro 5 R. Called AFE and talked to a guy named Terry. He works in their sales department. He gave me a sweet deal on it and even threw in a filter cover for free. Highly recommend them for customer satisfaction if anyone needs anything from them.
