So I'm an ignorant poser with a "fake" truck

    That's low

We should run a few trails so we could test your theory and see which driver has the most capabilities

For the 2nd gen yes, but only because of the gears that toyota put in the trans.

My cousins pre runner (04, extra cab, auto) with the 2.7 doesn't get much better than my 3.4 4x4 DC auto
We both have heavy feet also.

Driver skill has a little to do with off road capabilities. Judging by your comments it seems your ignorant to that fact.

OZ, I know I know, but I like to help, so I'm just helping DSMJRV off his high horse. It's my good deed for the day :D

Lol I will say that a locked prerunner will get through some shit. More then it should. Not saying it replaces 4x4 at all, just saying I've kept up with my 4x4 buddies when they thought I wouldn't be able to make it.

They also made the prerunner for somebody who wants the capabilities the 4x4 had(ground clearance, tow capacity) and only goes offroad occasionally, (no rock climbing), so a locked prerunner works fine. Better mpg, no 4x4 insurance

There's no excuse at all for an auto. Except for the fact I didn't have a choice

I love driving a 5-speed, but for a daily commuter auto just works better and gives my left foot a break (left hand riding the Vulcan) during 5-10 mph lulls :)

    Even then, there's no excuse.

Over my adult life I've lived mostly in LA and the DC area - two of the heaviest concentrations of traffic in the nation and this is the list of cars Ive owned.

    00 Chevy S10 - 5spd
    96 Mustang GT - 5spd
    99 Mustang GT - 5spd
    95 Bronco - Auto
    2011 Mustang GT - 6spd
    96 Tacoma - 5spd

Ive been through the worst traffic LA and DC have to offer and I would never choose an auto over a manual, both cars being equal otherwise. The people that complain about driving a manual in 'city traffic' are either lazy or ignorant - I find it is in fact easier to drive a manual than an auto in those conditions. For example, I can just use my left foot to feather the clutch in stop and go as opposed to constantly using the brake to make sure I dont roll into the car in front of me.

Kind of like when you see the 'costume' Camaros or Mustangs for sale on CL. You know, with the fast and furious body kits, the Lambo doors, and gawdy chrome wheels. When you look close, you see they are almost always V6 autos.

I perceive that the OP either is unable to see the other side of the coin, or feels the need to bash things he doesn't like to feel better about himself, so for the record I'm not a psychiatric professional , but I have stayed in a holiday-inn express.

Facts are: Under 10mph traffic jams beat the life out of a clutch, been there, replaced worn clutch discs.
Above 35mph on the flat and 55mph uphill, 65mph on steeper hills, my 4.0V6 locks the tranny into overdrive, just like high gear in a manual.

my opinion, after having driven both for many years, is that the manual only has advantages in two conditions, when traveling in the 10~45mph bracket MOST of the time in a condition where torque control is important, or when racing where you have enough problems cooling an engine without trying to cool the larger and heavier automatic transmission.
