It is taking my engine forever to turnover in the mornings, noon, and even right after turning the truck off. the battery has been tested and it says its ok, so that leaves my alternator and starter.

    ANY IDEAS????

What kind of oil do you have in the engine? Type, and weight?

I heard that if you turn the ignition on and leave it for a little before turning on, it should start faster. This is because of the fuel pump taking time to get gas or something. Idk im not a mechanic.

I've said this time and time again for most people, you can't just turn the key over. You have to give the fuel pump a second to prime the system. Its only common sense once you understand it. The fuel pump doesn't turn on until you turn the key to 'ON'. Basically you're trying to start it with no gas.

If that doesn't fix it, get a tune up. That is all :)

Your alternator has nothing to do with starting your truck unless it completely fails to start. The starter is obviously turning it over, so why would you think that it could be the problem?

Depending on your mileage, if you're over 50k without a tuneup, I'd reccomend it. The factory toyota spark plugs are copper and wear out fairly quickly.

And remember that the first step in a tune up is a complete battery service. At least that's what it says in my 1947 Motor's Manual.

That means battery, and cables, and connections get cleaned, inspected, and tested.

I don't know how many good-looking battery cables I've seen in the last 40 years turned out to be bad due to concealed damage or corrosion.

Batteries can look fine and test OK, until you do a serious load test.

Finally, vehicles with digital injection need a certain voltage to operate the computer. They are often very finicky about battery condition/connections.

I've seen vechicles crank over plenty fast, and they would have started OK if they'd had breaker point ignition. But the voltage fell just 1/10 volt below what the computer wanted to see, & the engine just wouldn't fire.

That's true I forget how much the computer controls things nowadays. Either way, he said he had it tested. If he took it in, I would assume they load tested it. Thats standard nowadays.

70k on original plugs though, jeezzus, do a tuneup bro, I'd put money on that being your issue. Standard tuneup is around 30k, I let mine go till 45k and the plugs didn't look very healthy anymore. Gaps were inconsistent as well.

Good info. I'm going to have to start leaving it in the on position longer instead of just cranking it to start.;)

I find my 4cyl takes 4 or 5 revs before it fires up.
I'm so used to previous vehicles starting on the first rev.
Sales person said that Tacomas (and Tundras ... demoed both) are long turnovers.
Dunno how long your turnover is ..... but I find my situation definitely long compared, as I mentioned to other vehicles I've driven.
It's pretty new, - so nothing dirty or worn out as yet.

    "normal"

If it's not running, then a- it's not getting gas, or b- not getting spark
(or timing ... which is not an issue, since it runs). Suspect strongly - a, and I agree with the posts that suggest waiting on presurization of fuel line to injectors.
Gas filter?, bad fuel pressure regulator or check valve, fuel pump weak.

I take it, it's turning over OK .... otherwise battery.

Spark .. if wires and/or plugs are bad, that'd work against you for sure as well ... however does it idle smooth after starting? Likely not bad wires/plugs. I'd be looking at fuel (or mixture - ie too rich if air filter is heavily clogged) Mixture and weak spart together would certainly cause hard starting.

Gotta try leaving my key in 'on' a few seconds before starting to see if that reduces the number of revs my starter has to make.

    Edit:
OK, adding this next day .. as one poster mentioned, turn on until the beep - ~3 sec. Starts on the 2nd rev. (quicker than not 'priming' it) So definitely building fuel pressure from the time you turn the key, and needs to be at a certain pressure to fire.

How long does it take from when you turn the key to "start" to when the starter engages and cranks the engine?

And then how long from when it cranks to when it runs?

I'v noticed that my Tacoma takes longer to start than my previous vehicles. Just one of those things I guess. I'm going to have to try leaving turning to ON first for a second, then starting it.

Keep in mind a "Long time" could mean only a few seconds. If its 5 seconds, or less, thats considered normal.

I wouldn't say mine is slow to start. It starts exactly like our V6 Camry.

    click, 1, 2, 3, vroooom

They've both started like that since day one.

    Now my Bonneville starts like this;

    click, va, roooom

Unless it's been sitting without being driven for weeks.
Which happens since I bought the new Tacoma.

Then it goes click, 1, 2, 3, vroooom
