How does your Tacoma perform in snow?

My 2wd 5 lug A/C has only got stuck once, about 40 ft from my driveway in a 4 ft drift.. the past two winters have had lots of snow, and have had no problems other than the 4 ft drift.

 

we just had 6 inches of snow 1 inch of ice then freezing rain I have nitto tera grapplers and this thing goes like a tank no issues

 

Mine has yet to get stuck in snow, but then again, it hasn't met a 4-foot snow drift before.

 

Awesome in snow as long as you know the capabilities. It is a light truck in the back, so you should add weight. The stock tires will work in 4x4, until it gets deep enough to drag the under side.

If the snow stays fluffy and you are on tar it does not matter how deep it gets, but once it starts setting up you need decent tires and/or weight in the back. Honestly on road it is no better than any other 4x4. Mostly it comes down to how much traction you can get, which means tire selection.

Off road it will be better due to shorter wheel base/narrow stance. If you don't know how a short wheel base and narrow stance will help then you should spend more time off road, but a shorter wheel base will cause the back end to come around faster. So you need to be ready for that. They are awesome little trucks, but do have limitations. Plan ahead because they are not unstoppable no matter how you FEEL.

Keep a shovel in the truck. Chainsaw/handsaw or something to cut trees. A tow strap and some good long lengths of rope with you. Invest in a good come-along or winch and you will be fine. Chains are not a bad idea either, but keep in mind they will only work on the rear (mostly).

Fresh snow is a whole different animal than end of season snow.

 

Mine loves the snow. I work in the hospital and have to get to work no matter what. My tacoma just handled the last 20" storm beautifully, and I am still running the stock sr5 tires

 

I've got BFGoodrich A/Ts on my 4 banger, and has been a total blast so far in the snow.
First proper storm hit since I picked her up. Probably 8-10 inches of slippy wet snow. I let it pile on for two days, then went out with the old shop broom and cleaned off the truck while it warmed up.
Ended up plowing right through my un-shoveled driveway like it wasn't even there. Had to use 4hi to get traction after I reversed to turn around, but it caught and took me out, up and over the top of the bank left by Mr. Snowplow from earlier.
I live 10-12 miles out of town, so I got to test the truck out on back roads and highways with only minor coverage. Handled really confidently the whole time on the highway. If I got a little exuberant with the throttle in a low gear it would kick out the rear slightly, but the TCS reigned it back in.
Got to kick it into 4lo on my return to the house in my own driveway. My dad's big Hemi Ram was parked right in the middle because he got it stuck earlier, so when I crossed out into the yard trying to get around the back tires dug in. Just flipped it over into 4lo and it bulled through it like a champ.
I don't think my Taco is equipped with the fancy a-trac that I've seen mentioned on here either, so I have to credit all of that handling to just the base stability control gizmos.

 

Mine is dangerous as all hell, but that's because I'm running some mastercrap courser ATs with barely any tread left. Despite that, it's still handling it well. I was hoping to get some duratracs on it before this last snow hit, but that didn't quite work out.

how do you guys get anywhere with the stock tires? i removed them at 600 miles, and haven't been happier.

 

My regular cab 4x4 loves the snow. I was good with the stock tires but I didn't like them and had some toyos with good tread so when one of the stock tires got a fatal nail I put the toyos on. Now it's great.

I was fooling around and got stuck in a ditch in a foot of snow, had to use 4 LO and look out the window to be sure my front wheels were pointed in the right direction and we got out.

 

Love my Tacoma in the snow .. I'm on Hankook AT's now. Not the best in deep snow but they are great in ice. Here's a video from yesterday pulling a 3500 Chevy out. It took several tugs and a few re-positions. The snow was about 6-8" and really icy underneath. My truck navigated it fine, never once thought .. uh-oh. Lots of other people even in 4WD were having issues.

12 DCSB 4x4 with Duratracs

Went anywhere I wanted to go, in fact in the big snow last week I did not even put in 4x4 on the road at all, no need.

The only time I used 4x4 was going around some other trucks in a field while taking the kids to ride their sleds.

Very pleased with the truck, not to mention the Duratracs

Smart driving and tires make a huge difference. I've been driving for 30+ years, so I have lots of experience in the white stuff. I also have 2 extra steelies with Firestone WinterForce snows mounted on them. They really calm the back of the truck down and bite really well. I've had no issues at all in my 2wd....and that's with no extra weight in the bed.

 

As stated earlier the rear end is light and it spins very easy in 2wd which = going nowhere.
Other than that up HEAH in Maine we just got 10" a few days ago 6-8 last night so the roads were pretty covered and in 4x4 the truck is a tank. Goes anywhere you steer it "within reason" and really performs well overall even with the stock tires on it. Driving in snow is a technique not all grasp to well. Even the ones who live it every year seem to forget how and that's evident on the first snowfall each year with the amount of cars in the ditch.

Bottom line is the truck goes great in snow no matter what tires are on it and given you had a little common sense.

'06 4-banger stock to the bone is fun to play in on ice and snow, but driving to and from work with only RWD is no bueno... but hey, who needs 4x4?

 

Mines stock with Cooper Discoverer A/Ts. Last year we got stuck in a storm in PA/MD/VA and we drove about 150 miles in 4-6 inches of snow. The truck never left me feeling like we were going to get stuck, just took it slow and easy. We must have passed 50 cars, trucks, and SUVs in ditches and on the side of the highways (all okay, no one hurt).
