this is that Hilux we rented in Samoa to do some Island off roading!!

 

i know i need to do that.... to make sure itd be okay for longer term drinking.
it would also be interesting to know whats in it.
we did a little testing of your own while we were up there last i guess you could say. i drank a cup straight from the spring, and im fine! obviously it was only a cup, but thats pretty cool.

If it's running water exposed to a decent level of sunlight and you aren't in cancer alley, you're generally going to be ok. Heavy metals like lead and mercury tend to settle (so don't kick up the sediment), and most bugs/amoebas don't care for U.V. exposure. Low-level, short-term exposure to heavy metals aren't even *that* bad for adults, but it will wreak havoc on childhood brain development, cause cognitive disabilities, and lead to failure to adjust to social situations, etc. One emerging theory of inner city violence and cognitive impairment is the thousands of tons of lead dust from leveled buildings over the last hundred years, which kids are constantly exposed to as they play and roll around in the dirt.

Organic solvents and certain soluble polymers would be your principle concern (you can get cancer pretty dern quickly from guzzling even low levels of, say, benzene), especially if you have manufacturing nearby. Activated carbon filtration will generally take care of that.

Here's a reasonable good paper from A&M on the topic, if you're interested. Certainly, it is always good to get your potential water source tested, but, like the bar girls in Thailand, that official looking piece of paper only tells you that it WAS clean, not that it still is!

I'm planning on not having a functional vehicle, so having my truck would only be a HUGE bonus. My trek to my bug-out spot is a 2 day walk with my family, minimum. I'd much rather drive there in 45 minutes.

 

I have used the MSR sweet water since 2005, pumped some ugly green colored water out of a standing bog and the water was clean, no hint of color or bad taste. I use a little bleach to clean it and dry it out well before i pack it away, I am still using the original filter cartridge from April 2005, still pumps like new, i have back up cartridges still in the package, but I am not too worried about using them yet. Excellent filter. The water works is another nice filter, I have a buddy who uses one, and he says he likes the mechanics of the sweet water better. But both are great filters. the katadyn pocket water filter is another great filter, I have another friend with this filter and he has no problems with it what so ever! It is a little on the heavy side and costs $350. quite an expensive filter but worth every penny. Don't get caught with a filter that just filters particulate, you need to filter bacteria as well, so def do your home work first!!

I ran across a video the other night and watched it, thought it had some good messages and pointers concerning survival and was well put together. The dude who did the shows name is Ray Mears. There stories about survival and of the things that have happened to people.

Since watching the first I've watched a handful more of his on that youtube channel, all that I've watched so far have been pretty good (so you may wana check some others out). Anyway I wanted to share with you all, hopefully some might find them good too. And figured the subject matter was applicable to the thread and people into survival etc.

So I'm new here but not to prepping or expeditions/wilderness. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was thinking of shtf when I got the truck lol.
I've been working as a wilderness guide and primitive skills instructor for three years and I'll say on water filtration you won't want to use those tabs long term.. eventually they start to really make you feel like shit (chemicals in it I guess.) But I have a katadyn hand pump that I've used to drink from some really nasty water and always have tasty clear water come out. Only downside is the filters are about 35 bucks a piece.. but luckily I get them from work for free on occasion.

Also, if you're using a ceramic filter be warned. If it freezes and its wet.. its done! They are no longer capable of filtering. I always use the paper/ charcoal filters at work. You never have to worry about them. Just food for thought if your weather is like mine up here

Yes, the truck and trailer that I have figure into my equation as well and are viewed as a single unit. This is a pretty cool thread with some good solid information and lots of guys with some really solid ideas!!!

Thinking about upgrading my suspension ( not a lift). Should I think about getting the OME susp. system (about $ 1200), or something else. I ask here because I only want my truck to be as good as it can be, not a mall crawler/desert racer. I use my truck as a daily driver. In addition I'm planning on getting a replacement bumper (Pelfreybuilt or ARB) so I will have to account for the extra weight. 08 Prerunner SR5 TRD Offroad. Thankyou in advance.

I apologize. I posted it in the survivalist page because I thought that like minded folks (preppers and the like) would be able to steer me closer to a suspension upgrade thats not for looks or true rock crawling, just an upgrade.

 

I would advise you to trade in your prerunner for a 4wd.
That would be the wisest suspension upgrade you could make from a survival perspective. It might not make sense cruising to the BK on Goodfellow right now, but what happens when you get orders for somewhere where it snows? If you are stuck on your truck, then get a quality rebuildable coilover like Icon or King and a couple rebuild kits. Why? Logistics. Post SHTF you can rebuild your shocks indefinitely, no matter where you happen to be in the world. In a pinch, vegetable oil works as shock fluid.

 

OME with a brute force bumper and winch. Now mention something about knives or guns or GTFO
