Ok, I don't do physics and all that bull shit, but REALLY, is there that much of a difference between the "better" traction of a 265 and a 285. I mean it's not like it will ever come to the point where you can't make an obstacle or you get stuck because your tires are an inch narrower.

And before you say "oh, well this guy on 285s got suck here and I didn't" there are so many other variables goin into that situation that the difference in width is neglegable

Well if the difference in surface area that is contacting the ground is 20% smaller, there should be nearly 20% more friction and therefore better traction but like you said, there are so many other factors that make some tires better in some situations. I think bigger circumference is the only thing that will be advantageous in all wheeling conditions, as long as tread pattern and sidewall strength is just as aggressive. Overall taller tires=better.

^ well said. Daily driving snow conditions You want skinnier tires that cut through the snow. Wide tires on snow is horrible for traction, unless you need the floatation. As said by Brady to justify a wide tire you need deep deep snow as in multiple feet.

Haha good joke! Can't have rock therapy without the number one rock therapist!

Read above. Wider tires are not for snow.

I personally feel anything over a 33 is unnecessary from an every day driving/wheeling vehicle. You add wear and tear, lose mpg, have to seriously modify you truck. With that bring said I love having 35s.

If you look at the serious off-roaders in Australia none of them have 35s. Probably has something to do with the distances they have to travel. With proper armor and good driving 33s vs 35s is the extra inch of clearance worth the trade off? I just had this talk with a few friends and from a realistic perspective there was no need to go bigger than 33s. Yet 4 out of 5 of us have 35s. Haha

Now I'm definitely a rookie compared to most of you. This is just what I have observed.

Well...up here in Canada land, the difference in the snow is immense. And I'm not being exaggerate either. We have about 3-3.5ft of snow on some trails and A 33" compared to a 35 is night and day. The guys running the smaller 33's wish they had the width and floatation the 35's did. Their last trail day started at ~9:30am and went until 11 at night. Simply because of the snow depth and the amount of recoveries due to the smaller tires digging down. Which isnt a bad thing! We're all out to have fun, enjoy the outdoors and see how much snow we can get through:)

The last thing you want to do is dig down to the frozen ground with skinny tires. Especially when you start throwing weight figures around. Let's put spoonmans truck or Reeeno403 up against mine. They air down to 8-10lbs in the winter, mostly because of weight and not running bead locks. Myself (no bead locks) 5-8lbs. I come in at 4250lbs fully loaded. A second gen is considerably heavier, therefor....decreased floatation.

Many people have strong opinions about what tire size to run...what looks good, what looks bad. Maybe we should start another thread in a NON ROCK RELATED SUNNY DESTINATION thread. After all...this is the 2014 ROCK THERAPY thread haha.

Here is why I'm going 35s. Difference looks worth it to me haha

I love how this year the talk is tires. Can't say I've seen this much debate over something so specific in the Moab treads before

This I would agree with. I'll bet the wheeling difference between a 285 and a 255 are negligible. Fitment will be different though. I barely had to trim to clear my 255's at full stuff.

Um as soon as I get back from moab the SAS starts and I go to 40's:D so yes it does matter

Sorry but that's a no brainer decision IMO. You can go to Moab anytime. Baja should be on everyone's bucket list. The Baja 1000 is one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. Chasing it is tough. I think I slept for a total of 10 hours over the 11 days we were there.

.....and I know this won't change anyone's mind but 35's are not going to change your capabilities in Moab much at all. Period. But keep telling yourself they will if that's what you need to do.

I agree with Adam. I have tons of friends on 35'a and they can't do anything hat I can't do, or at least that isn't decided by the tire size. Also I would love to chase the 1000. I love tht shit and you can go to Moab whenever you want Ben! You live like an hour away. Although I will miss you

Im not making shit up yeah you can still do all the same trails but because of a higher break over point and my frame being 4.5 inches taller I can make harder lines and do harder obsticals.. point and case mark and I have the same wheel base he is on 33's and im on 35's we wheeled metal masher and I made an obstical he got hung up on and had to be drug through.. then we got to widow maker I got my front tires to the top where as all he could do is spin his tires when his bumper hit first..

35's help you do more. FACT. how much more depends on your wheeling style..
