Not used to 4x4

I just bought my 09 tacoma a few weeks ago and put it in 4x4 for the first time today. I noticed that when I tried turning the steering felt funny while pulling into a parking spot. I took it out of 4x4 and backed out and drove forward again but after a few feet I heard a CLICK. Im assuming this has something to do with it going back into 4x2 but this is my first 4x4 so I really dont know, any info on the steering and the CLICK is appreciated.

 

if you were on pavement or concrete that is typical. bit of advise though... DO NOT engage 4wd on hard surfaces such as pavement... only use it offroad on when roads are covered in snow ect... when engaging it on hard surfaces the tires have to much grip and put the front driveline under extreme tensions and can break stuff!

 

Don't use the 4x4 on pavement!

That weird feeling was the drive train binding up. You can do some serious damage like that. The click was most likely the 4x4 being disengaged and the stress in the drive train being relieved.

 

You can use 4x4 on pavement, as long as you don't turn too sharp. Eg when pulling a boat up a ramp, put it in 4x4 when you're in position, drag it up in 4 then put it in 2 when you're on flat ground/need to turn.

You shouldn't use 4x4 on pavement.
The diff was binding, the wheels want to turn at the same rate, while turning they can't do that.
Rocks, dirt and snow are what you should use 4x4 on.

If you had read the manual you would have seen multiple warnings on how not to use the 4x4.

 

agreed, but i could use my jeep locked in 4 low on the pavement till the cowscome home. it would have shredded my tires, but I could've done it!

 

I think on a Tacoma you’d break something before you shredded the tires.

 

Why do people even feel the need to engage 4x4 on pavement?

 

perhaps they had just bought the car, and wanted to try out every feature?

No "true" 4x4 will allow this.

When you are in 4x4, all 4 wheels are connected to the same thing (the transfer case) when you turn, the inside wheels turn less than the outside. Since 1 common place is turning all 4 wheels that are (for all intensive purposes) locked together when in 4x4, there is nothing to slip. If you are in mud or snow, the inside wheels will be allowed some slippage.

That’s why I would never buy a used truck. But I admit, before I was as smart as I am now, I tried my 4x4 on the pavement in my old truck once, and I jumped my old truck in San Francisco once. Luckily I didn’t break anything. But that was a long time ago and I would never do it again.

 

I'm not knocking anybody but I would assume its common sense that 4x4 is not meant to be used on pavement...

 

Not really, when there's planty of vehicles out there that are 'full time 4WD'/'fullt time AWD' etc.
