Turned out I had the ISO set to 100, but there was another parameter in the menu system "ISO Sensitivity" that I also had turned on.
I guess that overrides the manual setting? Dunno... If I turn it off and put the metering in "auto" it goes where it needs to... 3200 on down.

Anyways... so this is the same area cropped from a 500mm shot.
Settings are the same, f16 at 1/1600, ISO 3200.
I got the ISO down to 100, but I was working hand-held and at 500mm I was getting some blur.
Much nicer. On the other side, where the shadow is starting to kill the edge, there's some sweet mountain range detail...

And the whole shebang, properly oriented north-south.
It's retouched a bit... wife likes a blue tint. I also selected the black sky and brought the levels to zero, so there's a slight halo that was not in the selection.

    I owned a D3 while I owned a 1DmkIII.

Nikon does not make a bad camera. But, I got too much in Canon glass to switch.

If Nikon made a 5DMkIII I'd be pretty happy ha

I prefer Nikon just for the feel/layout/used to it but don't really subscribe to the whole one is better than the other thing.

As far as FF goes the D800 is just too ridiculous for me, the D610 I feel would be a step down (even my AF system on my D7100 is better), the D4 is obviously way to expensive and huge and that leaves me with the Df which they botched up horribly in my opinion, ha. I'm not looking to go Full Frame at all. But if one was looking to go Full Frame in Nikon it would be great to have an in between in comparison to the D800 and D610, such as a 5DMkIII equivalent. (I really wanted to love that Df, but to downgrade AF systems, pay as much as a D800, and basically get a D610 with a D4 sensor, and then have what could have been awesome controls all mangled and useless I basically am glad I have a D7100. It's the only camera in the lineup that appeals to me (personally).

EDIT: I'm throwing in the disclaimer that these are all my personal opinions based on very personal needs and fully recognize what phenomenal cameras the D800 and D610 are ha I didn't want anyone to think I'm saying they aren't better than my D7100. I'm saying, while they are technically better, for my needs they don't appeal to me ha just so no one gets upset or anything :D

I'd almost be willing to drop back to a D700 for FF. The D800's file sizes are huge at 36mp and would kill my laptop trying to edit them, especially an HDR. I really hope Nikon decides to come out with something better than the DF. What a disappointment.

Not a bad option, really. We're so quick to dismiss "old" gear these days haha what was once "the best" can suddenly be garbage just because new tech is out.

Couple other "bokeh" options. I'm realizing I like the single guitar head better than the four. Less distracting. Oh well ha B&W edits are on my flickr. I really like the color better for the different wood tones.

The tuning machine gears almost look airbrushed.

Almost SOOC. Just bumped the contrast up quite a bit and made very minor tweaks (+/- 1-9) on highlights and shadows and all that.

I'm not so sure I'd want to do anything that required wearing a helmet if said helmet has an EOS strapped to it.

I was digging through some old backpacking shots. This was from a year and a half ago.

Edit-anyone ever submit anything to dpreview? I uploaded this shot, and it looks super shitty on there. Like super pixelated, and noisy...

    Nice shot! Is it HDR?

DPreview probably applies heavy compression to uploaded pics to save space and bandwidth.

New to AP but I hope to get some good time in this summer now that my rig has been tuned.

Noisy and a bit over processed but this was my first real picture. 1 hour exposure (15 x 4 min) through a tiny 3" refractor. Cropped from the original
    [IMG]

Orion Nebula, Same 3" refactor 1 hour 20 minutes total exposure. Cropped but not resized; almost no sensor noise in this one.

Those are great results from a small refractor! Get some more imaging time on the subjects and they'll stand out more, but the level of detail in them is already really good!

Thanks, yes it is hdr. That makes sense, and with the amount of editing, it looks super crappy. Awesome.

What is your setup? Are you shooting with a dSLR or astro-specific camera? What mount are you using?

Speaking of astrophotography, did you know that PGA golfer Jimmy Walker shoots astro?
