spent all day yesterday building some removable fender guards. hanging out with two good friends was payment enough for me :) i'm more than happy to spend a day fabricating in good company if they bring the materials. it's the projects that are going to last/consume a few of my weekends that i charge for.

ARB clamps at the headlight hoop, and Ruff SStuff roll cage clamps down by the slider

it was a good 12 hour day to get it to the point that we were hapy with it. and he still needs to take them off and paint.

we went into it with only an idea in our heads though. no drawings or dimensioned out designs, so a good bit of that time was planning i guess.

Yeah, that definitively looks like it would eat up a days worth of work. Like it a lot though.

Thanks, Owner's pretty pumped to have them. we've been working since before the holidays to get a free day lined up where neither of us had anything going on, and it turned out that we did indeed need the entire day.

IMO, even a halfway decent hit on that will push it into the fender. Needs to be somehow supported in the middle, otherwise there's too much leverage/give

It should work as is for twigs and branches, but not for trees and rocks.

He's halfway setup for a full exo, I say go for it and tie it into the shield cage. After that it should take a decent beating.

It'll take the hit that we designed it to take. of course a tree at 20 MPH will destroy it, but it'll support the truck without damage if it tips into a tree while you're crawling. if it were meant to have the strength of a full exocage, we would have built acordingly, but it's not.

Owner of the truck was talking about addidng a removable cross brace over the hood down the road, but we'll see if that's needed for his purposes after the first trip or two.

Ah, he just wanted it for slow roll over/slide impact, I don't see why that wont support that kind of hit without fatiguing.

yes. not designed to be as strong as a rock slider. and if he takes a hit that is strong enough for the guard itself to damage the fender even slightly, then whatever he hit, would have toasted his fender, hood, and a number of things under the hood without the guard.

    i agree

Just picked up a Lincoln 225 AC. I have been looking around and the cheapest I could find was $125 with the leads cut off 2" out of the box. Found this one (5 minutes after it was posted) for $100. It's a little bit dirty, but the cables, stinger, and ground clamp are in good condition. Has all the labels/stickers still on it and it works better than I thought it would.

FUCK!!!!!! Just got home from the chiropractor. Received an injury from a crowbar 7 years ago, and just now went to get it checked out. My neck bones/discs are chipped, worn, dead, and offset like an effin' lighting bolt. The doc suggested getting an auto-dark hood to reduce excessive neck movementany suggestions for a good 2x4 1/2 lense. Pretty pissed

I recently bought this one. I'm liking it a lot so far. I'm just hobby welding and doing fab on my truck, not in a shop all day, so I couldn't justify the prices of the other ones. Its got a huge viewing area, bunch of different adjustments (in dial form), can charge via solar, has grind mode, and is very light weight. Not for overhead welding (its plastic, not metal), but it sounds like it could fit the bill for you rather well.

If you have the dough, follow matt's advice, otherwise I'm liking this thing a lot.

Indeed. Old coworker of mine started his weld shop several years ago, his last name was Miller so pretty much everything in the shop is Miller. We bought him out a few years back.

Thanks fellas. Price isn't an issue. I weld 10-12 hours/day, 5-6 days/ week. Need something light and GREAT. Kinda hesitant to use another speedglass, but their 13 oz hood sounds appealing. May just look for a lense to fit my pipeliner, and trim the shit out of it to reduce weight
