Hello all i'm new here, 2 weeks ago or so i put on 265/70/16 Tires in place of the factory 245/75/16's and i got my spare tire out and compared height and the new tires seem to be about an inch or less shorter, I thought 265/70's would be taller then the 245/75's I know my new ones are wider but they are actually shorter, do different companies vary on tires? Because i have saw 265/70's on other toyotas and they are taller, it don't look bad or nothing but it appeared to me they were shorter by a little before i compared it to the original spare..and it turned out to be right..Here is My truck with the new Tires [IMG]

I had the same oe tire size and went with a 265/75/16 tire and had no problems with rubbing when turning or any movement of the front suspension

You increased the width of the tire not the height. Google search how tires are measured and you'll find your mistake.

265/70R16 and 245/75R16 are the same overall height. If you wanted to go taller, 265/75R16 are a popular size.

    265 / 70 / 16

First number, 265 is the width in millimeters. Divide by 25.4 to get inches

    265/25.4 = 10.43 inches

Second number, 70 is the aspect ratio, or basically a percentage of the width. 70% of 10.43"

10.43 x 0.70 = 7.57 inches That is your sidewall. From the wheel to the ground is 7.57". Now you multiply that by two because you have sidewall above and below the wheel.

    7.57 x 2 = 15.14

The last number, 16 is just the height of your wheel in inches. So a 15", 16", or 17" wheel will just have it's number. So, take your wheel height (16) and add your tire sidewall height (15.14) to get the total height of your tire.

    15.14 + 16 = 31.14 so you have a 31" tall tire that is about 10.4" wide.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any further explanation.

I disagree. He needs a working understanding of how and why that calculator gets the numbers it does. We live in an age where you can google anything but the problem is we don't think or know how to think for ourselves anymore.

/thread when the OP can calculate tire size himself without a cheat sheet and then he can use the calculator all he wants.

Thanks for all the replies..I did use the tire calculator and when i compared sizes, yeah lt said that 245/75s and 265/70's were about the same height but wider..I wanted wider and got that.but lost a little height according to the factory Dunlop Spare would have thought the spare and the new tires would have been the same Height, unless my old Michelin's were wore down they were 10 years old..Do Ya'll like a wider tire or a taller narrow tire on a tacoma? Also the tire calculator said that the overall Diameter of the 265/70's were just a little taller so did the tire shops i went too as well

Yeah these tires are Wild Country Sport, made by Cooper 500 tread wear, 60,000 Mile tire so i picked them up for $500.00, and they ride to me good as the Michelins i had but they were old too..Thanks

I guess getting down to it Someone today when i was out in town today told me they looked too short for the truck so it got me thinking about the whole tire purchase, But 265/70's are all over on these trucks i have saw Michelins, Bf Goodrich, Lots of others, and the others i see have taller skinny ones like i took off, so i guess it a matter of what someone wants
