Maybe I'm off base, but farming families and mining families are portrayed as having an "every child must stay home and do what their parents do" mentality. To me, it just seems more likely that a kid gets stuck in that life if their parents could make them center their education around what they do (my parents had to sign off on my courses so they could have forced me into classes I didn't want), rather than taking mostly core curriculum, gaining high test scores and going to college, where the kid gets to choose what they do.

You don't need to learn a trade in high school, that's what college is for. I know college is not for everyone, but the kid should be the one making the choice.

our point here is that YOU don't have to have YOUR kid take these classes. just because a school offers an ag course doesnt mean YOUR kid is going to grow up to be a redneck hillbilly

you're making blanket statements about ALL schools that offer an ag ELECTIVE, saying people that went there/go to these high schools are "lesser" and will amount to less than a preppy HS where kids are taught how to take tests.

 

I'm sorry that you were forced into such a horrible lifestyle.

Let us not forget that saying "I will not allow my kids to attend a school that offers ag courses" is the SAME mentality as "I'm going to force my kid to be a farmer"

Maybe he's mad that I'm going to give the sheep an edumication! And it's not fair to force this sheep to learn stuff while all his friends chill in a field!

I am not saying you can't get a good education, or get into college at schools that offer ag courses. I'm not saying the school you go to actually determines how smart you are or how capable you are. My initial statement was made based on my local knowledge, and where I went to school, also what schools offer around here. The schools tat focus on core curriculum produce high test scores, more students take AP classes, and the college acceptance rate is not only higher, but the types of colleges the kids get in to are better as well. I read some where that Stanford only accepted 10 applicants from the state of Ga, 5 came from my high school. The opportunity to do what you want and go where you want to go is greater at a school like the one I went to. Every student in my graduating class went to college, and most were accepted to their first school of choice.

 

Best way to fix that? If you're new, don't say stupid shit! Problem solved. And if you're not new, don't say stupid shit either! Win/win!

It's kind of like when I'm driving. I don't get road rage until somebody does something stupid. I don't just road rage on people at random.
