Hey guys, I'm about to buy my first Tacoma. Does anyone know if the 4cyl looks different/sits lower than the V6? Or, any opinions on why I shouldn't get the 4 cyl? I won't use it for any heavy towing, and would just like the better gas mileage since I'm in California. None of the dealerships around here have the 4cyl in stock.
Any advice would be great...thank you!

As far as stance, you have the base and prerunner. Base comes in v4 only. Prerunner has both. The base will get better mileage as its lower and smaller tires and all, but some here do have the prerunner with v4 as well.

Thank you...I'm looking at the double cab PreRunner. I don't like the look of the base.

Same stance. Because it's lighter, the 4cyl may even be a smidgen taller.

LOL v4... LOL No such thing, it's an Inline 4 or I4. Oh and if you go 4x4 theres no real stance diff between the 4 or 6 banger. I have the 4.0 v6 and love it.

If you drive in the real world, slim chance you will get much better gas mileage with the inline 4, especially if you pair it with an automatic. Also read on here a few complaints going up inclines with the 4. Stick with the six, especially if you are getting a doublecab.

A lot of people complain about the 4 banger not having enough power and the slight increase in MPG's not being worth it. I would test drive both and make sure to take them up hills and stuff to see which is right for you.

Thanks...I've read complaints about the 4cyl double cab, so I'm thinking it may not be worth the better gas mileage. Does anyone here have a 4cyl, double cab PreRunner? Thanks again for the feedback

Thanks...no one in the area has the 4 in stock. I'm trying to decide if I want to drive a couple of hours to test drive one, or if I should just get the v6

Get a v6 double cab 4x4 I garuntee if you spend the money up front on a truck you want you don't regret it. A lot of guys on here regret not getting 4x4 and the mileage between the pre runner and 4x4 is miniscule at most 1 mpg.

I have the base access cab 4cyl SR5. I like my truck but if you're going to get a prerunner or a 4x4 get a 6cyl. I had a 99 prerunner 4cyl and it got about the same mileage as a 6 b/c it was turning big tires and the gearing was different. So I knew when I bought my 11 I wanted the "old man version" for the mpg advantage.

The 4 cyl 5 spd is fine on power, and you get about 22 mpg vs 18 with the v6. The 4cyl auto was hesitant to down shift and not my cup of tea. I have no problems going to Santa Cruz in mine, going to Tahoe you will feel the lack of power. Best of luck to you.

Thanks...that helps a lot. I don't make it to Tahoe more than 6 times a year or so, but I don't want the 4cyl to be a problem. Really appreciate the comments

I test drove the 4 banger and I was supposed to stay on the freeway for 2 exits and then loop back to the dealership...I got off at the first exit and went back to the dealer for the V6

    I had a 2011 access cab 4wd 4cyl 5 speed, now I have a 2012 acc cab 4wd V6. I get almost exactly 1 mpg less with the v6. I wouldn't suggest the 4 cylinder purely for gas mileage. It's almost no difference.
I liked the 4 cyl, but with the v6 I have never wished I had the 4cyl. instead.

    I have a 2006 4x4 4 Banger 5 speed, I like it for what it is, I don't need the extra power. I'm averaging 20 - 24.5 mpgs

For a double cab, I would get the v6 !

Thanks. I keep reading about the 2015's, but they are just rumors as of now, right?
