Has anyone done it? I'm thinking about doing it instead of getting new rims.

Look at STEELTACO's build thread. He powdercoated the wheels and left the hubcaps silver. They look awesome.

    I haven't asked, but I think it's about $50 a wheel.

I had the wheels on my '07 powder coated in 2008. When I bought a new truck in 2010 I kept the wheels and still run them today. Six years of year round use and they have help up exceptionally well.

Thanks Josh, as a reference here they are yesterday with six years of East Coast wear and tear.

Looks good I've thought about doing mine like that, wife's uncle owns a powder coating business in Tennessee, so shouldn't cost me anything ...

Diggin' the TRD centercaps. I just plastidipped mine yesterday to see how I like the look...i'm not usually a fan of the blacked out look but I think I like it. If I can have it done for a reasonable price i'd like to powdercoat them. I really like the style of the Sport wheels...

    thats impressive quality powder coat!

do you know the prep method the shop used? did they blast them or go right on top of the existing finish? any details?

ive heard powder is only as good as its prepwork

They were blasted completely first and I agree with you that it is the key to quality work. It wasn't cheap, around $500 but I don't regret it at all and the nice thing is that you retain the OEM fit. The centre caps btw are from the FJ "Trail Teams" wheels, ordered them through my local dealer.

If money is the issues and you have a good amount of time to kill you can paint them with the "special" rim paint from an auto parts store from the good ol rattle can. Once again lots of prep work on them of sanding it down but can look just as good as spending 500+ for powder coating. My rims took me like 6 hours to do but look just as good as powder coating.

yeah... I got a quote today and they wanted $1,000 for all 4 on account of the sanding. I saw a guy's plastidip at work today and that looks a lot better and is more reliable than I thought. change of plans :)

Powdercoated the snow wheels on the wife's Impreza. I like the way they turned out.

They're overcharging the hell out of that. In cincinnati we have a guy called "The Wheel Doctor" who charges 85 bucks a wheel and he warrants his work.

All said and done, assuming you need someone to unmount and remount the tires, it shouldn't cost more than $500 bucks.

I must say that if Plasi-dip was around when I had mine done I'm sure I would have tried that route first. The trouble is that with the stock TrD wheels there has been so many instances of the finish bubbling and rusting the only real way to assure they hold up is to blast them down and start fresh. As I mentioned, 6 years of wet salty winters and the only sign of wear on mine is where some over zealous donkey with a socket gun "dented" the PC around the lug nuts in spots. That was very early on and I assure you he never had the chance to rotate my tires ever again.......prick. I also agree that a grand is too much, shop around and I think you'll find a better deal.

will do, there are a few others in town that I want to check with. what would make the finish bubble when using plas-dip?? also, prick indeed! you'd think they would be a little more cautious.
