So, I went through some water...

Actually, it was alot of water. As I was going through it I realized it was at least over my tires and began thinking "I immeadiatley regret this decision". Sorry I don't have any pics of my truck in action, but I was by myself and it was raining. Here's some I took of the engine bay, which got very wet and muddy. I checked out my air filterand there was some moisture in there as well. A small puddle was in there (pre filter intake tube) and the filter had a small water stain. The secondary air filter also had a VERY small stain on it. My engine still runs and sounds normal, should I worry about anything?

 

you sir are lucky water didnt get in any farther and cause you to hydrolock. depending on how high the water actually was.....i'd drain the diffs and transfercase(if you have 4x4), as you may have sucked water into those through the breathers.

 

I would recommend draining and refilling the diffs. as well.

 

How fast did you go through them?

 

I do have 4x4, and I went through them as fast as I needed to so I wouldn't get stuck. So what kind of process are we talking about with draining and refilling the diff's and transfer case?

 

Not that hard of a task, just unplug the drain plug and let it drain, then plug it back up and fill it up with your favorite oil. I learned my lesson from water crossing, Keep a slow steady pace, about 5-8 mph. dont go to fast or too slow.

 

I wasn't staring at the spedo, but I was around 5-8mph. Like I said, just fast enough to keep my momenteum and not get stuck, but not too fast to spin my stock tires too much and dig in. Does going slower keep water from getting into the diff? So from what you guys are telling me, after every time I go through water I have to drain them and the transfer case? That sounds like a pain!

 

no, not at all. you need to depending on how deep you go. as for the front diff and transfer case....the breathers are high enough that you are probably ok........rear diff may have sucked some in....at least drain/refill that. then,you may wanna do the breather extension mod.....which moves your rear diff breather higher up so it takes no chance of sucking water in. im just saying to drain/refill both the diffs and transfer case now incase water did happen to get it. that can play havoc on your gears.

Thanks for all your help guys! Maybe I'll do the drain and breather extension mod while I'm home on leave next week. Am I good to make the drive home, aprox. 800 miles?
Also, I've been meaning to pick up one of the AFE filters, would one of them help or hurt me in this situation? At first I'd say no difference at all, but the OEM filter seemed alot like cotton, and very absorbant, I've handled several performance style "K&N" filters and they didnt seem as absorbant.

 

you should be good on your drive back....................just,if you start hearing any kind of grinding/growling from the rear end............dont drive any farther until you do at least the rear diff. the afe pro dry is a good filter......but as far as water getting in.....no filter is good for stopping water.

 

Thanks, I think next time I have to go through some water I'll try doing what my dad has always done on his chevy's. He just disconects the intake further away from the filter and just puts a rag in there. It adds some extra hieght to the intake and the rag helps soak up any water that still gets in there. Does that sound like something that would fly with our trucks? I know this is more of a "good ole boy" thing to do, and you dont really see too much unprofesional stuff on here, but its worked for him for years.

well.......personally,i wouldnt stuff a rag in there, as it would limit air and you may run rough since it wouldnt be able to breathe too good. the intake opening in the fender isnt really all that big, so it may not be too good an idea. just do the breather mod on the diffs.........and if you are gonna be hitting deep water alot....may wanna look into getting a snorkel. and trust me....im all about "good ole' boy" things to do...................its how i live my life man.

 

You should be ok. I never knew about changing the diff. Whoopsie! I went through a lake of a puddle and I puckered up. Ji think the water was at the bottom of my door, but I kept my speed up.

 

Might as well change out the filter, and the AFE Pro Dry S is a good one. But as someone else already said: No filter is going to mix well with water and still do the job it's designed for. I guess putting a rag in front of the filter might get some of it, but still--No such thing as water PROOFING a filter.

 

You mean you didn't fry the alternator ?.............................

 

Nope, as a matter of fact until you asked me that I didn't even look to see where it was in there. Seems kind of low compared to the other vehicles I've delt with (america). Maybe its a toyota thing?
