Hey guys (and gals), I wanted to get your opinion. The dealership finally called me back and said they are declining the warranty coverage on my differential. The service advisor told me they took apart the diff and sent pics to corporate. When they took apart the diff, they observed that essentially ~5 inches of the ring gear was destroyed.

Later the dealership noticed damage to the interior of the diff housing. They sent pics and Toyota corporate sent two technicians today to examine the claim. They concluded that due to 'extreme usage' there was deflection caused internally which nearly caused the gears to puncture through the diff housing.

So they gave me the number for corporate and I'm mulling over my options. Do I climb the chain of command? Does their analysis seem valid? Do I move on from this incident and call ECGS and start re-gearing? Re-gearing and adding a locker sounds awesome but that would be hella expensive.

SHITE!!! That sucks Will! I would definitely give a call to Corp. See if they can provide documentation of the "analysis" they had performed to come to that conclusion. Of course, there is going to be damage inside the housing...the damn teeth got chunked-up and chewed-up inside. What do they expect to happen?

I would even go as far as to say that possibly the Driveline vibration combined with the axle-wrap on these rigs may have attributed to a loosening of the pinion's crush sleeve, causing the pinion/RG to misalign and ultimately resulting in the failure.

If all else fails, take it to another dealer...either way, that sucks man. I will help out once I get my truck fixed...

That's too bad - I'd be interested in what exactly is in the fine print regarding "Extreme Usage". Personally, I feel like it's kind of a gray area.. Sure, the truck is still under warranty; but I do feel as though Toyota is right to denie coverage based on how exactly the damage occurred. I know that's getting into some semantics, and might be a baseless argument - but I feel as though any time you take your truck off road, you should be prepared to be fix whatever breaks.. I'm still chasing down some issues that resulted from a water crossing a few months ago - it definitely changed how I drive through things/plan my route. My truck went out of warranty 100k miles ago.. Maybe it's my engineering background - but stuff breaks. I take each repair job as a chance to learn something.

I dunno dude.. It would be intriguing to see exactly what is contained within that "analysis" - I'm sure that they automatically speculate that any rig with bumpers/sliders is used off road.

If you choose to regear, go to JTs in Wenatchee. They're the sole importer for Nitro Gears in the US; ECGS buys everything from him.. Talk to Carl; you may very well be able to get it all done in one day.

    Good luck!

Yeah - I don't think I'll take it to another dealer. This last trip to the dealer cost me almost 3 weeks without my truck only to be towing it back to my house. I can chase the claim with the current dealer, replace with an ECGS 3rd, or replace/regear 4.56 both front and rear with an ARB locker in the rear. The last option sounds sweet but it's a steep chunk of change and one I wasn't quite yet ready to move forward with.

The thought of replacing with stock 3.73 and then regearing later also sounds kind of counterproductive.

Yeah - I was going to get to that..

I think you could spend weeks chasing them around, I'm sure they could care less if you're without your truck..

Makes sense! What a way to earn money by sponsoring the company!

x2!!! Left work today a little after 4pm and by the time I got to the hwy217 southbound turn off traffic was a complete dead stop. Took me 30 mins from there to Allen exit, decided to say EF it and not go to class, which starts at 5.

That sucks Will - I can't believe they kept it for so long. I hope you beat their Prius sufficiently.

Why the fuck would Toyota make a TRD OFF-ROAD model if you aren't really allowed off the pavement? And what am i supposed to do with a crap trd sport?
