I did some searching and couldn't find anything similar to my problem. Lately I've been getting a clunk going from 1st to 2. In lower rpms I noticed getting into 2nd was much more difficult. When I'm up in rpms it shifts smoother. Now, every now and then going into 3rd the gear will grind. I did change my fluid to mt90 maybe 1k miles ago. Could this be the problem? I'm at 173k. What do you guys think?

    just a guess

first, this may sound stupid, sometimes when i have trouble shifting its because my floor mat has moved and i can't get the pedal all the way down

second, my shifting became A LOT smoother after replacing the shifter ball and seat. get new ones from Marlin. my truck has 175,XXX miles and i just changed them.

i never had an audible clunk it was just difficult to get into gear and chunky feeling

maybe that helps, maybe i'm way off

Not getting clunks after replacing mine at 175K,,but it was/is a much firmer shift with straight 90W and cold components. I usually wait for a 2+ min warmup before setting off and then it's fine.

At this point anything helps, thanks guys! My husky mats stay in place well so that's not the problem, though good thought. I have been letting my truck warm up for 5 min before setting off this winter so that's not the problem either. It doesn't matter how warm it gets the shifting stays the same. It's a little bit knotchy in the cold of course, but 2nd is always troublesome unless revd fairly high. I may just have it looked at by someone.

Can you post a link to where you got these? I searched the Martin website and couldn't find it.

You might even try bleeding your clutch. I just did it a few weeks ago and it smoothed things out considerably.

I thought about that too. I don't think it's ever been done before haha. I'll try to do that today and see if it helps. Can I bleed it without using a brake/ clutch vacuum bleeder? I'm assuming using the same method as you would for brakes.

I did it the same way as brakes, and there was a lot of air in there.

So I bled my clutch today with little improvement. I'm sure new fluid would help some more, but I don't think that's the issue. I haven't noticed my clutch slipping at all, but could it be a worn clutch? I'm 99% sure it's the original clutch.

Interesting. I get this too rarely and only in second and only in low rpms. It makes a weird howling sound also when I take off from a stop in first. When I bought the truck (40k ago) dude said it could use a new clutch but i have yet to notice any slipping or grinds...hmmm.

Check your ujoints. Lubricate your ujoints.

Check the 'slop' in the driveshaft. With ebrake on, in gear.... roll under the truck and grab the driveshaft. Try to rotate it. How far does it move?

Technically, it shouldn't move at all (new truck) but as trucks get older....there can and will be some slop which sometimes can cause a 'clunk'. My old 96 I had - had about 1/4" of free rotation at the driveshaft when you rotated it by hand. I had a clunk especially going into 5th.

My drive shaft is solid, no play whatsoever. I lubricated everything on my driveshaft last service so I'm fine there as well.

Edit: I did grease my slip yoke last service as well. Could that be causing my problem?

    Update:

I drained and bled my clutch yesterday. The clutch itself feels better but no luck with the shifting. I think I'll try the shifter ball and seat next since it's cheap and can't hurt doing it. Is there a write up somewhere on how to do it?

How much grease did you put in the slip yoke? You can - theoretically- over grease a slip yoke. Too much grease - it can't *slip* (can't compress grease) unless there's something there to let the grease out/vent (more or less).

It's hard to say if that's your problem or not.

If you were pumping grease in there and STOPPED as soon as you saw the slip yoke moving..... you should be fine. But if you kept pumping and pumping and pumping ...????

You might want to read this thread....especially post #6

I found a similar thread on here that stated to take the zerk out and flex it some which I did and had no excess grease come out. The shaft did extend some though. And I did that months ago and haven't had a clunk until recently.

So I need the white shifter seat from marlin, and the "all other applications" socket correct?

Well just in case anyone was wondering, I did get a new seat and bushing from toyota and after driving it for a few days it has *in fact solved all my problems. Feels like new again! Thanks for the help guys.

Hey guys, sorry to bring this thread back up but my problem has returned. It seems that the bushing and seat smoothed things out for a while but now my shifting is getting bad again. I have also noticed a whine only during acceleration that I have never noticed before. As soon as I take my foot off the gas it disappears so it must be the tranny. Im starting to get pretty worried about this, I hope I'm not going to have to drop the trans. What do y'all suggest I do? Maybe new fluid? Bummer since that mt90 is barely used.
