Not sure what to do with my truck...

i'm up in the air on how to proceed in the future with my truck. not immediately near future, probably this time next year. a little about my truck first:

2005 reg. cab 4x4, and i've modded it so it is exactly everything i need and nothing i dont. been paid off for 2 years now, i've owned it since 39K, currently has 114K on it.

here is the situation: i'm getting hitched at the end of the year, and although we didnt discuss when, children are planned in the future. obviously, a reg cab truck really fights that lol. and i dont want to make the future wifey drive her car(cobalt sedan)all the time when kids come about.

I love having a truck for hunting, hauling, and i love having a 4x4 for this time of the year. i'm considering 2 options.

first option: i could trade the truck in on a newer (doubt i can afford brand new) double cab 4x4 and end up with a pretty high monthly payment. the benefit would be i would end up with something newer and lower mileage. i'd say the reliability would be more than what i have now and would have that "peace of mind" of having a newer, lower mileage vehicle.

second option: i sold my acura integra gsr sedan to get my tacoma. i never should have sold that car! i wouldnt be in this situation now lol there probably is only a handfull of bolts on that car that i did not turn myself, i know those cars inside and out. i would keep my truck and look for another integra sedan or possibly a civic sedan. benefits: cheaper so no huge monthly payment, i can work on probably 99% of those cars myself, and the honda reliability comes with it. Downside: older vehicle, may end up working on the car more than i'd like to (doubtful but still a possibility), have 3 higher mileage vehicles, and would be a third car to take up space, pay insurance, and maintain.

Its off in the future, but if i decide to go the acura/honda route, if i find one cheap enough and in good enough shape i may pick it up this year.

really torn on the two options so i figured i would make a thread and see other people's opinions and see if there is anything i'm leaving out in my internal debate lol.

 

Keep the reg cab and use the wife's car to haul kids. They are a few years out anyway, right?

 

What's wrong with the wife driving the Cobalt?? It's a sedan.....

Why would you need TWO vehicles that are kid friendly? Do you plan on having triplets or something?

Getting rid of a high mileage *paid off* vehicle to buy a different high mileage vehicle (acura)- makes no sense. What have you gained? You've gained one spot for a child seat but you've lost hunting, hauling and a 4x4.

But seriously....Anytime you need to haul the kid around, take the Cobalt. If absolutely necessary, install a car seat in the Reg cab and tell the wife to sit in the middle (do you have a bench seat?).

It's all in what you can afford. If you can afford to take on car payments NOW and have things paid off before kids come along..... But once the kids come along - payments are going to be harder to make. And, you won't have much time to maintain and fix higher mileage vehicles either.

 

Why the hell are you worried about kids now? get your finances and crap together before you have kids. I am single but at least I will admit I wont have kids until I can pay for them.

 

Not directed at the OP, but too many people have kids without having the means to take care of them.
