So I just replaced my rear axle seals because they were leaking, and I took the wheel speed sensors out to clean all the oil off of them. After I got it all back together I took it for a test drive and now have a new problem. When I am coming to a stop at 10 MPH and under the ABS kicks on as if the wheels were locked up, but they aren't. This happens every time I come to a stop. It's like the sensors think the rear wheels are locked up. The weird thing is that the ABS light does not come on.

I have tried taking the sensors back out and cleaning them more, and also bleed my brakes again, but nothing changes it.

Has anyone had this problem, or know what to do?

    (the truck is a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 5spd TRD)

Anyone have some suggestions before I spend a bunch of money on new sensors?

My 07 tacoma has this issue. Emergency brake and abs lights on and off. The abs actually turns on while just driving. Randomly. No braking. Took it to a brake shop. They couldn't find the problem. I'm going to try adding break fluid. If that doesn't work, could be my rear seals leaking again (1year and a half ago) fluid coats the rear drums and makes them inoperable apparently. Always a toyota dealership issue for $1500. Ugh. Good luck.

The sensors can be under oil and still work they are magnetic. Did you replace the shoes or just clean them?

The problem started before I replaced the shoes. Then when I replaced them nothing changed the problem was still there

Was this an issue before the axle seals were done ? Did you break one when taking it out they are pretty easy to break might need to get a scan tool on it and see which sensor is acting up

no it was an issue after I did the axle seals. There are no abs light or brake lights on so I don't think the scan tool would find anything.

A good scan tool with live data you can see which sensor is reading slow and or erratic
