I have a 2007 toyota tacoma bought it used from a ford dealership and I have some warranty on it but if I took it to the toyota dealership to have the check engine light check about to see what's wrong would they charge me to have that test to see if anything is wrong?

Depends. Usually there is a diagnostic fee to check it out, and if you decide to do the repair, they waive the fee. This is not a rule of course. If you decline the repairs, then you pay the diagnostic fee. Can't ask the tech to check it out for free! lol.

Doesn't Advanced auto and the like do a free scan?

Do y'all know anyone who has had that done by them? And what they told them was what was wrong when the vehicle? Not saying there's anything wrong with them doing it just that it's free and not getting tested from the actual dealership your vehicle is from

Yeah, its just a scan tool. Tells you the code the check engine is throwing. Then you look up that code to see what it is.

How would you look up the code? Once they told you what code it is

Why don't you just take it to the Ford dealer that you bought it from and have them use their scan tool to find out why you have the CEL? You said you have a warranty right? One thing that will cause the CEL is if the gas cap isn't tight.

Lots of possible things. And yes, the parts stores can read the code, but they do not diagnose the code. So any recommendation from them would only be a guess.

interesting I stumbled upon this thread, My check engine light and traction control light came on a few weeks back, I took the truck into Toyota to get the scan done, Scan came back and said I had a faulty O2 sensor, Warranty covered the part and install, but I still ended up paying $140 for the scan!! Should I go back and talk to the service manager and see if I can get my $140 back??

If the repair was under the emissions or factory warranty, you should not have been charged a dime.
