The lack of low range is a huge disadvantage. Everyone talking shit about his clutch work should keep in mind that his turbo'd forester has fairly tall gears compared to a truck. His (open) center diff is a viscous coupling which basically requires some wheel spin before it locks. Automatic subarus actually have a better-suited AWD system - despite still being limited by it's lack of low range and open diffs - for the kind of terrain in the OPs vid.

It's still a dumb idea to take that car up there. It's clearly not designed to do what he's using it for and he's breaking things doing it from his clutch to OP saying he has to pick up pieces as they go.

If you read his comments on youtube he seems ignorant judging by how he thinks hes doing nothing wrong. Idk I'm a noob too but I can accept my limitations and take advice. If he's ignoring advice I would be pissed off like OP is/was.

I would NEVER take a Subaru on those kinds of trails. My girlfriend has a forester and the most intense off road action it sees is limited to logging/forest roads. The AWD system in it is incredible in most low traction settings but hills and obstacles are not what it was designed for.

OP, your friend is your friend. Only you know if he will listen to your advice or resent you for it, and whether or not that matters to you... That poor, poor Subaru is going to have to be beaten to death before your friend understands it's just not meant for those kinds of conditions :(

If he is set on a Subaru, have him pick up and GL wagon. Those Subies had low range and some I believe even had diff locks. Jack it up, put some meats under it and beat it.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Still, that Subaru probably went further than most pre-runners would.
