Got my 60K done by the stealership

I had my 60K done by the stealership for a little over $800.00. The quotes from private garages ranged from $725 to $850.00. I told the private garages I would provide my own Mobil 1 5-30, Mobile gear oil, crush washer and filter, and plugs The low cost garage had never heard of crusher washers and said providing my own oils, filters, plugs etc. would not lower the cost. The high bid garage offered a discount if I brought my own parts and oil, the price came to equal the stealership bid. I went with the stealership and they were wiling to provide driver runs to work, to lunch and then to the stealershipafter work.

 

800 for this!!!

Pleasant Saturday afternoon job and can be done without a lift.
$400 is a ripoff... much less $800.

Take it to Discount Tire/America's Tire and pay the $40 to buy the lifetime rotation/rebalance.

 

Auto parts store, oil,plugs,filters,syn gear oil etc. $214

 

How did your buttock feel this morning when you got up?

 

OUCH... I paid like 1700 for 100,000 miles or 8 years of maintanance.

 

So $800 and they didnt even flush the tranny?

 

I would think with the vast knowledge and DIY threads you would want to attempt to tackle this by yourself unless you are not mechanically competent. And even then some of the stuff you could still easily have done.

 

I had my 60K (2011 V6 DCSB TRD OR) performed at the dealership for $320. I just didn't have the time to do it myself.

Replaced Spark Plugs
Tire Rotation
Oil & Filter change (I supplied the oil)
Front & Rear Diff and Transfer Case fluid change (I supplied the gear oil)
Tranny Flush
Tighten/Torque Drive/Propeller Shaft
Regular inspections - like someone mentioned....who knows if they really do this....but everything on the form was checked on the green box.

Although not cheap.....pretty reasonable I think.

 

They should have provided a lot more for $800.

 

100,000 miles
20 oil changes
20 * 30 + $20 * $5 = 700 for oil and filters (Mobil-1 synthetic and Toyota filters, those numbers are padded by as much as $6 so it could be as little as $600)
Two air filters, that's $40.
3 sets of copper plus for a V6, or one set of Iridium plugs for a 4-banger, that's $70-80.

Your brakes are not going to be included in that when you need pads at 90k.
If they follow the maintenance schedule, they probably aren't going to flush the trans, or even drain and refill.

I've never seen a tech "torque the propellor shaft"

100k/8 years, you MIGHT get one coolant flush out of them.

You still got ripped off... but not as bad as the OP.

They did; they followed what the owners manual requires and/or at least signed off on a statement of work. I have no idea if they cut corners or even gave me back my own used spark plugs. You guys need to know that I can do a lot of these tasks myself but I have a bum left shoulder that keeps me from crawling around underneath, on or around the truck too much. I can't even pull my bow back right now because of my left shoulder.


I installed/mounted my own winch a few months prior to the shoulder taking a dump on me, so please give me a break here.

 

Did you get a list of what they did?

Here's what is called for.


Replace oil/filter.
Replace air filter.
Replace Cabin air filter.
Rotate Tires
Replace limited slip Diff oil (if equipped)
Replace spark plugs
Inspect a lot of things

A few more things if they asked if you tow.

 

Yah, that's about what it was for my 30k which is virtually the same as 60k except for a few less "inspections." $800 yikes!

 

Ripoff! But when you add up the pre-defined amount of time to do each task multiplied by the dealer labor rate, + 15% markup on the materials, it works out $800 or so. I think materials from auto zone would add up to about $100-$150, if you were using irdium tipped spark plugs.

It always comes back to whether 1. you are mechanically capable of doing the work 2. you have the place to comfortably do the work, and 3. you have the tools and a convienent place to store them. If you any yes to all 3 of those, then it doesn't make sense to spend $800 on the work. If you answer no to one or more, then it may make sense....but you probably need to look for a reputable local shop or indepentent guy rather than a dealer to save some money.

 

There went some nice aftermarket wheels.

 

Hey OP, sorry your getting so much flak for paying that much for the service. That is a pretty penny you spent but you still are staying on top of your maintenance schedule which is most important.

 

Don't hate on the OP so much. Yes it could have been done cheaper by yourself but I think if someone can afford to pay for something and is willing let them. But in this case OP is hurt, but OP there are plenty of people pry willing to help out with a case of beer and lunch.

I can do most of the work on any truck/car/motorcycle. This past weekend I flushed my radiator, changed spark plugs, did an oil change, inspected my valve clearance, changed my rear brakes, cleaned/oiled my air filter on my motorcycle. Granted this took around 8-9 hours to do myself after stopping and having to get some parts. But its almost worth it to me to spend the money to have someone else do it just since I wasted a day after I worked over 60 hours in the week. Hardly anytime to do fun stuff.
