Jeremy, just get the 50mm 1.8 ef lens. Its 99 from b&H right now if you were to get a new one. I picked one up last week and love it. I have a 50mm pentax k mount lens I have an adapter for and have to shoot it manual, its fun but not super useful when you just want to shoot and dont have time to worry about focusing all the time...

I like them. I think they would be great if that small medicine cabinet mirror wasnt there. The single reflection would be cool, but in the ones you can see the back of her head, thats where my eyes go first, and I think that is distracting. But I am probably the worst person to critique people pictures. I dont like taking pictures of people.

Amazon has it for $99 too! I was wondering if it was a waste of time, because it is so cheap.

Do you think is will work alright?

I agree that the multiple reflection can be done well but you have to be careful that it doesn't become distracting. Perhaps with them being worked closer together or more dramatic lighting where she is in the spot light and those are dim reflections in the rear of the photo would add more depth/dimension. Try some shots with lower light and a flash or light of some sort set up just on here kind of dramatically maybe. Just my way of looking at it.

Don't let the low cost of Normal Primes fool you. That is one of the perks of them. They are very cheap to make. Wide angle, tele, zooms, IS, etc etc all of those thins add size, weight and especially cost to a lens. Normal primes are simple and typically very sharp, high quality lenses at a very low cost. Which is why (IMO) every single photographer should have at least one. The cost to quality ratio is better than probably any other lens you can get.

Thanks for the tips! This whole photography thing is tough. :p

I think maybe the prime lens would have came in handy for this one. I had a really hard time being able to get the pictures I wanted. It's a small bathroom so that didn't help. I also couldn't get the tripod to work where I wanted it so I shot them all freehand. I struggled with getting a clear shot with proper exposure while coming up with a cool/creative shot.

    In order they were posted:
    f/3.5
    1/40s
    ISO 400
    18mm

    f/3.5
    1/15s

Cool I think I will order one. I wish they had a cheap 35mm option.

I would agree with most of what you said. Where I differ is in quality. You really need to think about your gear and the image quality it will produce-I'm not saying that you cannot print large prints with a 1.8, just that you may want to consider image quality over price. If you do a lot of remote or harsh environment work then you will want to choose construction over price.

    Canon makes 3 different 50's. 1.8, 1.4, and 1.2. They cost $100, $400, and $1600.

Let's look at the 50 f/1.8 and the f/1.2. The 1.8 is 5 groups, 6 elements. The 1.2 is 6 groups, 8 elements. The 1.8 has a 5 bladed aperture where the 1.2 has 8. USM is available in the 1.2 but not the 1.8. The 1.8 weighs maybe a pound less.

So aside from the 10x price difference, what do you get? For one, plastic everything with the 1.8. 5 (1.8) vs 8 (1.2) blades give you better shape and quality to the bokeh. L series lenses are weather sealed. The 1.2 is sharper at maximum aperture (which is probably the biggest reason to own this lens). The 1.8 has more color fringing at maximum aperture too.

The 1.4 is closer to the 1.2 in features and benefits and is probably a better choice for the serious photographer than the 1.8. Save the 1.2 for the wedding and other low light shooters.

One thing is for certain. If you want a Canon 50 f/1.8, get version one. The 2nd version sucks by comparison.

I was making general statements about normal primes haha

Also the 1.8 Nikons have a few pluses over the 1.4 equivalents but I know nothing of Canon versions.
