Different approach to a snorkel

It is. The ID is close to 4 5/8" and the OD is 5". I'll go back to Homer Depot and see if they have one that's a better fit.

Edit: maybe this 3" one will be better.

Final thoughts on my job. I got a cheap hole saw kit from Harbor Freight ($10),and cut a 4" hole, dabbed some grease on the saw like I read online. Then I dremeled the hole out to fit. I recommend measuring your coupler/buffer diameter and trying to cut a more exact diameter hole instead of dremeling. The 90* was too long (I believe OP mentioned this) so I cut it and used this as the buffer for the hole instead of the rubber pipe fitting OP used. Just slide the extra piece over the pipe and push it in. So far after a couple rainy/pouring/icy days and a 1000 mile round-trip no water or other Ill effects.

Finally took a good finished picture.

What did you think as far as ease?
I'm curious as to your experience re: HVAC effects. Also, how long did you leave the pipe behind the cowl?

I can't tell any negative effect to the hvac. I usually keep it on re-circ but did test with it off. I did not install the diverter Wall that the OP did.
I probably have an inch or so on the inside of the cowl.

More plans for that down the road. My first thought was to put an air compressor there.

added to the group.. I used three inch tubing because the throttle body is three inches. also the end of the stock intake tubing is three inches. used some fuel line hose and cut it down the center and made a perfect seal to prevent rattle.

 

Very cool, Audi did this to their rally cars in the 80's. I'm just a little worried about major rain storms, or the amount of giant dragonfly's and bumblebees that one might be cleaning out of his filter on a regular basis! how long has this been installed? if it's proven it might be an alternative to the snorkel I want to install! However, good job, looks like a clean install, congrats.

 

Go check out the cowl there? I checked mine and was stunned to see how clean it was. I expected it to be full of mud and sand.

 

I've been through pouring rain, snowstorms, dust, and bugs with me and haven't noticed any increase in debris in the filter.

 

Air quality and volume is sufficient?

 

Everything seems good. Have had installed for a while, drove NC to DC and back too.

 

Very simple: The intake is right *at* the cabin inlet. Whatever you experience or have experienced with your cabin filter, you will experience with your intake. Ever get water in your cabin through the vents? Major amounts of bugs/dust/dirt/debris? It will be the same for the engine intake -- the two suck from literally the same space.

About 20,000 miles on mine and no difference in debris between stock location and the cowl.

 

just have to check all avenues before I go putting 4" holes into my truck!

 

I have had water come up over my hood and splash up over the windshield, while driving during some of central Alberta's monsoon style down pours, just driving down the street, wouldn't want any of that going into the intake

 

I plan on doing this cool, cheap mod, the only water I see will probably be from puddles or floods, but this will free up engine bay space and protect from splashes

 

Op...any particular reason why you went with metal tubing vs say something like PVC pipe?

 

If it was enough to give your intake problems, your blower motor in the cab would have had problems as well though.
