I haven't looked at prices in several years but the raw sheet stock price difference between cold rolled steel and stainless didn't used to be much.

Any chance of offering this panel stamped and formed in stainless?

Are any of these edges sharp? How about after shaving some off either side with a flap wheel to allow the stock plastic piece to fit? I don't have any metal working experience, and I do have kids who play in the bed of my truck all the time. Don't want them (or me) getting gashed.

Not for this run, sorry. Stainless seems like even more overkill than these are already. You need to cover it with something otherwise it will just be too slick. Even if you retain the plastic cover the top lip remains exposed.

I'll inquire about the price difference, but I don't plan to make any changes now.

Yes, the edges are indeed sharp. However, if you Herculiner it like I did, the material wraps the edges covering any sharp corners. To make it even safer, a few minutes with a hand file will knock down the corners.

I shouldn't have second guessed this mod.. last friday I had a tile roller in the back of my truck and I pinched it in with buckets of glue. Well the glue buckets moved while driving and sure enough the 150 lb tile roller slammed full speed into the center of my tailgate and it did some good damage.. my tailgate is now U shaped when you look from above :(

Shoot, man, I'm really sorry to hear that. That sucks. :(

Can bent tailgates be bent back into shape? Figuring it only took 150 pounds to bend it, how much could it take to straighten it?

(Then put this reinforcement on. :D )

    Hi guys,
Somewhere along the way I've read that there was reinforcement added to the Tacoma tailgate - somewhere around 2007-2008. Is this true? Even if it is I am certain it isn't the strength of what is being discussed here. I am trying to determine if I need this reinforcement. The only weight on my tailgate will be when I am on/offloading my ATV. Thanks for any comments.

Yes, you want this. I have an '08, and I would not call my tailgate reinforced enough to hold more than about 75 lbs. No kidding, one heavy dude standing or sitting on your tailgate is enough to bend it.

So was the tailgate reinforced that year, or am I dreaming that. I would like to get this reinforcement, but I am in Canada. Will have to check out shipping cost, or some other option.

I don't remember exactly. I think they added two more of the bent "braces" in the center.

Here's a pic of my '08 tailgate without the skin on it, so you can see how flimsy it is.
