    That is what's known as a pre-form. It's the "blank" that's fed into the blow molding machine to make a water bottle. Everything from water bottles to glass lightbulbs starts out as a smaller, thicker version first.

    I once had a job designing the molds for preforms that were to become Xerox toner bottles. Nearly as much art and guesswork as actual science.
