I'm thinking about manufacturing a cargo basket designed to mount on my bed brackets.

    Bed Brackets

If there is interest, I would post a picture of what I'm thinking about, then take some ideas from you guys.

In the end, they would be black textured powder coated just like the bed brackets.

Man this sounds awesome, but i'm still confused by what you mean. I've always thought that a square tent that then tapers at the top would be a huge seller for tacomas!

This is the first draft. I wanted it to look a little more "industrial" than the commercial baskets that you normally see.

It has plenty of spots to hook bungee cords, and it will bolt directly to my bed brackets.

Any thoughts on having the rack attach to the bed rail system but extending it a little more so the weight doesnt just rest on the rail but more on the bedsides? Just use the rail to secure it from moving but not necessarily weight bearing.

I'm interested, how much? And would it fit with a topper?

That's an interesting point. I was actually thinking about making it more narrow so you could still easily plop stuff in the bed by going around the basket.

Shipping is also a concern. The bigger I make this thing, the more it will cost to get to your house.

It may have to be broken down into smaller pieces just for shipping.

No idea on the cost at this point. I just dreamed this up today.

Whether or not it fits with a topper will depend on how wide it ends up being.

This looks like a good idea. Where are you located. I checked your profile and some of your old threads real fast and couldn't find anything. Just thinking about the shipping part :)

JK man... You do good work. Just hard to beat a Load Warrior for $175 off of Amazon.

How much was it to ship that Roadwarrior? Was it in one piece?

I'm in western New York. The basket would need to ship anywhere in the country for a reasonable price.

I did some preliminary shipping estimates, and it doesn't seem feasible to ship in one piece, so I'm going to redesign it as a multiple piece unit. Then I'll supply it with nice hardware, and clear assembly instructions.

It's 2 sections so you can add a extension if you want. 1 day shipping was $3 with Amazon Prime. Shipping will be your main problem because of Amazon's deal with shippers.

The one thing I don't like about the Roadwarrior, is that it's huge. Mine is going to be smaller so you can still get a couple mountain bikes on the brackets, and be able to lift stuff in and out of the bed.

And obviously I need to come in at a lower price point.

You can do that with the Load Warrior and your bed brackets. There is plenty of room on both sides of the basket to mount fork mounts and a tray on the back rail. I think it's the Mega Warrior you're thinking about. Now that thing is huge.

Nevertheless, I want it to be smaller than the one you have.
