Got a question for those of you in Law Enforcement, I've built "homemade" AR's, AK's and working on some 1911's which is legal in Texas. I recently got in a conversation with a wanabee detective and he said once built you have to give it an identifying mark and register it with the athourities because if you are caught driving to the range with weapons that have no #'s you will be arrested on the spot for possesing unregistered weapons. That kinda defeats the purpose of building your own and I will not do it but I do have a small child they will have to kill me to take me away from. I don't mind the laws and generaly play by the rules but this seems wrong so any enlightenment would be great. Thanks guys

are you taking about 80% lowers and AK flats?

if so, you are not required to put any marks on them by law. if you can legally own it you can legally make it for your own use. If you are worried about it, find some references online and print them out to keep with you. I did say that it is not required by law to put any markings on the guns, but it is highly highly recommended. I have yet to build a from an 80% or flat, I will eventually though. I will create a serial number for mine, most likely starting with MYOB0000. Besides, if you have a serial number on it, you can sell it easier if you ever decide to sell it. I recommend not selling a gun that you made (easier to screw up and get in trouble in my opinion). I hope I helped some.

also, the state of texas as far as I know has no so called "gun registry" (VA and TN do not either). If someone tries to tell you otherwise they are nuts. the only time you will have to register a gun that you make is if you make it short barreled (sbr/sbs) in which case all NFA laws apply.

I recommend doing your own research as well. I would recommend starting at federal law for making your own guns and go from there.

Yes I'm speaking of 80% lowers, AK's AR15's AR10's 1911's Remington 700's and 10/22's. I do want my own numbers for theft purpose, but not to register them. That's why I sold my store bought ones and learned to build them plus I really enjoy doing it. The guy I speak of is a good friend and pretty knowledgeable but when it comes to laws he thinks he knows he gets pretty high speed if you know what I mean!

It is, in fact, illegal to transfer a firearm you have made without marking it to ATF requirements with serial/manufacturer/city/state. Just wanted to clarify that point. Otherwise, no requirement to mark a gun manufactured by an individual for personal use.

Your friend is probably a bit misinformed and confusing this with mass production guns for sale/obliterated serial numbers

Also, when dealing with semi obscure firearm laws...I am a huge fan of keeping a copy of the law with me...not all LEOs are firearm enthusiasts

I had to teach my squad about older guns not having serial numbers the other day. We arrested a dude during a search warrant and he had a sawed off shotgun with no serial number. ..they were going to charge him with obliterated serial until I explained that serial numbers were not required until a certain year...his shotgun happened to be older than that

Actually there is a gray area there, the big thing is if it was made "with the intent to sell". Problem is they can stick you with that of you sell basically it's a good idea to not sell them

I am still trying to figure out where a gift falls into it. (Aka I make one for no money for a friend who can legally own a gun)

I don't consider it a gray area, but I like to err on the side of caution. Prosecution is expensive.

    From the ATF site:
Individuals manufacturing sporting-type firearms for their own use need not hold Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs). However, we suggest that the manufacturer at least identify the firearm with a serial number as a safeguard in the event that the firearm is lost or stolen. Also, the firearm should be identified as required in 27 CFR 478.92 if it is sold or otherwise lawfully transferred in the future.

    https://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/firearms-technology.html

And from a business that sells 80% lowers:
Can I build and then transfer a finished firearm to another individual?
Yes, but you’ll need to mark the firearm in accordance with 27 CFR 472.92 (formally 178.92) and follow all the laws that are in place today. Protect yourself and don’t put a completed firearm in anyone’s hands unless you have gone through proper channels and background checks. Following the proper channels will protect us, our family, and our friends, it’s also the best way to ensure you can come back to this site again and again as you finish your project. For any firearm transfer it is your responsibility to understand the federal and local laws and how they apply.

    http://polymer80.com/frequently-asked-questions/

And from an ATF opinion letter (from 2004, so 10 years old):

Also, for your information, a nonlicensee may manufacture a semiautomatic rifle for his or her own personal use. As long as the firearm remains in the custody of the person who manufactured it, the firearm need not be marked with a serial number or name and location of the manufacturer. However, if the firearm is transferred to another party at some point in the future, the firearm must be marked in accordance with the provisions set forth in 27 CFR § 478.92 (formerly 178.92).

Arizona also does not require you to register when selling from private party to private party, so can we sell unfinished or is that a federal thing. Just skimming and curious, I don't have any built guns

Does anyone have any experience with a Taurus PT-25? My dad had one and gave it to me a few years back but it wasn't until about a year I tried to shoot it. Honestly, I got a glock and forgot I had the taurus, lol. Anyway, I tried shooting it and it's like the trigger gets stuck at the half way mark. I looked through the online manual and I was wondering if replacing the trigger, trigger pin, and trigger bar if that would fix it. When I disassembled it and played with the trigger a bit the trigger bar would bow out a little at the halfway mark. I pushed on it with my finger and heard a click back in place. Just curious to every one else's thoughts on what the problem might be. I don't have much experience with this particular style gun (DAO) but I thought with it being a .25 ammo would be cheap and kind of fun to shoot. Thanks.

does anyone have a source for loaded all brass 12 gauge ammo?

I can find brass 12 gauge hulls, but haven't found any loaded shells. If i don't find any loaded, I'll load my own, but that is not my first choice (though I will load 2 1/2" brass hull 00 Buckshot)

I got to play with a glock 18 and an m16. Lots of fun, the g18 is much more controllable than I was expecting, the m16 was fun, especially when I got to put the upper from my AR on the lower, lots and lots of fun
