Idk if this has been discussed before in here but what are yall's thoughts on creatine monohydrate? Good? Bad? Neither? I've been taking it for about a month and a half and I've gained significant stregnth and somewhere around 15 pounds. Though a bunch of people keep telling me either its gonna kill me or all I'm gaining water weight

creatine monohydrate's only down side is stress on kidney if you don't consume enough water. but other than that there's nothing but good things to say about creatine mono. strength gains, recovery, some retain a little water altho me personally i don't experience much water retention. it's a supplement you can take year round. creatine itself does not put mass on you, but it aids in performance which creates more tearing in the muscle and you put on more size over a long period of time.

you don't need to load up on it though, there's only so much your body can process at a time

2000 cals per day....kiss any muscle you have goodbye.

Of the 3 supplements I take, creatine is one of them. No downsides, but their are guidelines:

Like Eric said, drink a fuck-ton of water...at least a gallon a day. I can guarantee you 14.5 lbs of the 15 lbs you gained is water...but that's not a bad thing! People gain water weight on creatine b/c they drink too much water, which is not a bad thing, either. The only thing creatine does is let your muscles hold more water, which makes them look bigger, which is good b/c you get stronger in the long run. Creatine streamlines water to your muscles, so if you don't drink enough water, you're gonna be dehydrated and your kidneys will kick your ass; it's not gonna be like you're on steroids and you're not gonna see much of a change. Your strength going up 10-15 lbs is probably gonna be it. Your muscles are just gonna be filled with water, so you're not adding any extra mass, just inflating them, per-se. Lastly, creatine won't kill you...Personally, I like to cycle it. Some studies have shown that one's body gets accustomed to creatine supplementation over time and the effects from it diminish; I don't know if it's true or not, but I usually do 3 months on, 1 month off, just in case...$10 for a year supply of creatine isn't going to break the bank

Keep killing and eating animals and stay away from hippie vans....your manhood will thank you later

Whenever I stopped creatine I'd lose a good 5-8 pounds

yeah buddy not gonna happen, most natural bodybuilders don't even look like they lift with a shirt on and im talking about elite bodybuilders. you are gonna have to be in caloric surplus for a least 2-3 years to see some real gains.

check out the westside barbell program, they have a beginer program, great for strength, and if you are new to weight you'll put on some mass as well, granted you eat enough protein and have enough calories to build muscle.

I'll look into it. I have t25 and insanity as well that I was thinking about starting tomorrow (t25 then insanity) I've been doing the dailyburn site workouts so far and they are really good but I cant find one that really fits me per say. I was thinking an extreme workout for just 25 minutes would be perfect.

I know Kyle is a beachbody coach so I figured maybe he could give me some info here

So you both want to gain muscle?

First off, you're not gonna look like a bodybuilder unless you're taking steroids or eating like 6000 cals/day. The easiest (only) way to gain muscle is to consume more cals than your maintenance.

For instance: If I eat 2500 calories per day and don't gain or lose any weight, that's my maintenance. If I eat 3000 calrories per day, I'll gain 1 lb. per week. If I eat 2000 calories per day, I'll lose 1 lb. per week. It's that simple.

That being said, you can't just eat Burger King twice a day and gain muscle...you've got to make sure you hit your macronutrients without drastically going over them. Your macronutrients are protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Before I get into explaining that, know that fat isn't bad for you, as long as you're eating the right kind of fat. Pretty much anything deep-fried is bad. Most oils (olive, canola, flax seed) are good for you. Fat is essential in a diet, contrary to what commercials tell you.

Anyway, find out how many calories you eat per day without gaining/losing weight and either go up or down 500 calories, depending on what your goals are (weight gain/loss).

The most important thing is to make sure you hit your macros, especially protein. It's common bro-science knowledge that you need to consume 1 gram of protein per lb of bodyweight (ex: I weight 200 lbs and consume 200g protein per day).

If you don't eat more than your body maintains, you're not gonna gain weight.

Lastly, there are 2 ways to approach putting muscle on: clean and dirty...Pretty much, clean means eating a lot of really healthy food and dirty means eating a lot of whatever dafuq you want. Each has their own benefits and drawbacks:

Clean: you gain muscle slowly with hardly any fat

Dirty: you gain muscle fast, but you also gain fat.

I prefer clean, but usually end up going the dirty route b/c, come Jan/Feb., I cut calories and start eating clean, so I look sexy for the beach season

    If I had a nickel..........

Thanks Zach, I'm not trying to be a body builder as I cant with my heart condition. I just meant that as in a perfect world type scenario. I'm really just wanting to get back down around 150 (more if its muscle weight). I'm more concerned with how I look compared to weight but when I used to be fit and in shape I was at about 149-150
