LSD w/TRD Off Road?

After reading various threads on differences between TRD Off Road (which I have) vs.TRD Sport model packages I am a bit confused. I understand that I have a locking differential but some folks think that it is also LSD when the locker is disengaged. Also, appearantly the truck is equipped with traction control and somehow it affects how the diff operates as well. Can someone shed some light on the situation for me?

 

It is NOT an LSD when disengaged (on your 06).

I think you're getting the 05-08 trucks mixed up with the 09+ trucks.

05-08's either have OPEN diff, LSD diff, or E-locker.

09 trucks either have OPEN diff or E-locker. No mechanical LSD's on the 09 trucks.

The AUTO LSD which is on ALL 09 trucks - is operated via the braking system (NOT the differential).

Some of the 05-08 trucks have the VSC/TRAC systems (It was an option). All 09 trucks have it.

Do you have the VSC buttons to the left of your steering wheel (near the bottom)?

 

to answer your question more directly, when your e-locker isn't on, you are riding on an open diff.

 

No VSC button. So no traction control either? Also from what I understand the diff lock is only to be used going straight and under 5 mph right?

I'm not familiar with all the VSC & Trak stuff myself - as I don't have it either. So yeah...no traction control.

The diff lock is only to be used in 4WD and in 4lo range (from the factory). PreRunner trucks (with TRD Offroad package) can use it in 2WD. If you're not familiar with 4WD usage, search around on the forum... you shouldn't use 4WD on dry pavement.

The diff lock is something you use in situations where you get stuck and lose traction or situations where you might get stuck. If you have a boat - and you're on a slippery boat ramp..... If you're offroading and get stuck.... If you're on a hill climb that could be unsafe if you lose traction half way up....

The diff lock shouldn't be used unless you need it. In terms of offroading - it's a matter of getting practice and using it wisely according to the situation & terrain you're dealing with.
