Chalk up another one to the quicky lubes.
Sad to hear but it is all too often these places pull this kind of stupidity.
DIY is well worth the piece of mind.

    sorry to hear kasey
as many have posted...sometimes it's worth taking the 20-30 min and changing your own oil. you can never really trust the fktards working at these quik-lube places. well, atleast from my past experience.
    hope everything gets better man

Go back to the other places you stopped at & get written statements from them about the tranny fluid being drained. It may be your only ammo against the idiots that did it.I hope you saved all the reciepts also.If you went 450 mi. with no tranny fluid,my bet is that although there seems to be no problem now,who knows what will happen later, that could equate to like 3-4yrs.of wear on the gears in 5-6 hrs.I would call the manager of the shop that did it & tell him the issue & that the dealership has the truck removing the tranny to check the damage & you will be sending them the bill for the damages.

Man, you wouldn't catch me going back to the place that screwed my truck up in the first place, OR any of it's sister stores. Screw that man, you could have alot more problems if the other place decides to be genius' and screw your stuff up for the second time.

Screw me once, shame on you. screw me twice, shame on me. But i don't give the twice option.

Depends on which plug they pulled.

Dude, hire a forensic engineer and a lawyer and put a world of hurt on that oil change place. No telling what it did to your tranny, and I am amazed (along with others) your engine has not blown every seal. They are insured and that is patent negligence (or incompetence).

I admire your relatively calm tone. I would be furious.

    1) This is why no one should ever use a quick lube, ever. DIY or die.

    2) DO NOT punch a hole in the top of your oil filter by banging a screwdriver in there. The filter mount is cast metal, not forged, and repeated impact is ASKING to crack it. If you want to drain the filter almost completely before removal, do this:

    - Pull the dipstick
    - open the engine oil fill tube
    - drain the engine oil like normal
    - remove filter

The filter will have almost nothing in it to spill out, and you don't risk and filter mount damage.

Take your Taco back to the quick lube place that drained you tranny and have them check the engine oil. They should see that there is way to much oil in your truck. Then you can point out they drained your tranny and added more engine oil, hence, they did not do a proper oil change. Hopefully there is not too much damage to your taco.

    jandrews is exactly right,

make sure you open the fill tube first then drain the oil and then remove the filter. All you have to do is either put a piece of rubber hose on the filter housing and run it down to the drain pan or just put a plastic bottle with the top cut out under the filter housing and remove the rubber plug.

Trust me the filter on top of the engine is the best thing Toyota has ever done. On my 2001 Tacoma you had to go in behind the left front tire to get to the oil filter, talk about making a mess.

Really, it's lucky if you didn't damage the engine here.

    In theory:

If the oil is so full (& I'm not certain if only 5 extra quarts would do it) that the crankshaft slaps the oil surface, it will foam up the oil and you'll be pumping air bubbles through the bearings instead of oil. If it's bad enough, or RPMs go high enough, you can actually break the crank.

So maybe you did bearing damage and maybe not, but if the oil level is high enough it can also damage the engine seals, causing oil to blow out through them.

It is almost certain that the clutch packs in the transmission suffered some real wear, because when a gear "quits working" it's because the clutch is slipping and burning. Brown contamination in the red AT fluid would be a good indication of this.

The gears themselves are probably OK, but if the clutch pack hydraulics were starved for oil pressure to work the clutches, then the bearings in the trans will probably be oil starved too.

Smell the fluid coming out of the trans. If it's brown and smells burnt, you've got clutch pack wear, and if it's got metal flakes, well you know what that means.

If you intend to prosecute & it'll probably cost as much as a new tranny to do it properly, I'd have a scientific oil analysis done by one of the srevices that do this. BlackStone Laboratories is one that should be able to do it & the cost is reasonable.

OR...Just hook up a rubber hose to the bottom of the oil filter cup, and let it drain into the pan, as it was designed. :)

man im sorry to hear about your situation. Like many other people i change my oil myself, haha infact i do it when i am bored sometimes but thats a little overkill... I dont trust those express oil change places because of stories like yours and other stories that i have heard where they dont even change the oil when you pay for it. but im glad to hear that there seems to be nothing wrong so far with your Taco bc that would be bad.

i am pretty sure the reason that the Tacoma did not break as far we you know it because, well, its a TOYOTA! hahaha Get some domestics!!!

That's what I do, but some people don't want any spillage at all when they remove the filter. I just hook up the tubing and give the filter a couple seconds to drain out when I take it off.
